Transferred funds in Natwest, wasn't made aware of the charge.

Hi guys, this morning I had to transfer funds to solicitors for house deposit and stamp duty etc, obviously a large amount of money! Decided to go into bank to do it rather than do it online to get a receipt etc.
The lady serving never mentioned anything about a charge and when I pressed 'enter' for the amount on the card reader, it was only the amount I was transferring. It wasn't until I was in the car on the way home that my girlfriend checked the 'receipt' and it said I'd been charged just over £20 for the service. I understand this isn't a massive amount of money, and that I should probably have checked the receipt when she gave it me, but is there any way of getting this back?
Thanks for any help.
Tom.

How much was the payment for?
If the payment was over 20k it would have been sent via CHAPs where a fee is applicable.

You'll be unlikely to get this back.
I guess the bank should have mentioned it, but when transferring large amounts of money for things like house purchases it is entirely normal for these to be made via CHAPS rather than BACS or FP (you will likely have been over the FP limit anyway) and CHAPS transfers are always chargeable, usually at between £15 and £35 per transaction.
Therefore it isn't as though you had any free alternative way to transfer this money and got stung by a charge you didn't need to pay.0 -
I'd say you got very limited chance of getting it back. You could start a complaint that you were not told, etc, and may get it back as a gesture of goodwill, but you probably don't want to go down that road.
If you had done it under the FP limit online, it would have been free, but you both would probably have been inconvenienced by the multiple payments required.0 -
Thanks guys, that helps a lot. Reckon I'll just give it a miss!
Appreciate the quick replies.

St Clair (or other RBSG people), do NatWest even offer FPS as an over the counter facility?
OP, if the amount was under the FPS limit then you could at least put the argument to the branch that if they'd told you about the charge you could have decided whether to continue or do it yourself at home. However, what you got was a guaranteed same day transfer, which might not have been the case had you done it yourself, so if the money had to be there today CHAPS was the best option.0
