Hi,

I'm hoping someone could give me an idea of if my gas and elec usage seems right - i know prices are going up all the time but I seem to be topping up all the time.

Im on pre pay for both card meter with ebico (sse) for gas and key for elec (edf)

Im using about £5 a day in elec and about £3.30 a day in elec.

Dont have many huge items, just the standard washing machine (every other day), dryer (every other day), fridge, dishwasher, freezer.

In terms of heating we have a relatively new boiler (3yrs old) but nothing else that uses gas. The heating is on for an hour in the morning and 5 hours in the evening.

I know its a how long is the piece of string scenario but if anyone has any input it would be much appreciated.

Tumble dryers can be surprisingly expensive to run, try to put the drying on a clothes horse next to a radiator when the heating is one.

Also I know someone who had an old chest freezer that was costing 50p a day to run, doesn't sound much but if you add that up over the year......

£5 for gas in winter for six hours heating is not crazy - providing that that is keeping you cosy. £150 per month. Of course you could buy this cheaper from another supplier than Ebico and even cheaper if you changed to a credit meter - using six hours a day over winter your payback for changing would be months not years.

£3.30 day in day out for electricity is more unusual. 10,000 kWh per year is a crazy amount to be using in addition to gas. Even if your price per kWh is more expensive you are still talking over 7,500 kWh. You do need to find out how you are using that much.

As well as looking at cash paid into meter you also need to take standard meter readings to check how much you are consuming in meter units - that is just as important with a prepayment meter. Just measuring cash amounts confuses things and makes it difficult to track. Take actual readings and monitor those.

I have my heating on from 08:00 to 22:00 with a whole house temp of 21 deg C and it is "only" costing me, at the moment, £3.00 a day for gas.

This is a 3 bed semi with only 2 people rattling around in it.

I would downsize but it will cost me more to do so.

Though in the middle of winter this will probably climb to £4.50 a day going by what I was using last winter.
Getting forgetful, if you think I've asked this before I probably have. :rotfl:

    Sorry,

Should have read £5.00 elec and £3.30 gas.

Its a 1930's 3 bed semi, with terrible damp behind anything in front of an external wall.

    me, mrs and 2 kids

Made a note last night of the readings on both meters and will read again at the same time tonight to get a 24 hr usage.
