  • Thanks Voyager,
I saw my nurse about 2 months ago but at that time I had to delay going. She said to have a look at fitfortravel web site also adviced to take Doxycycline, some details I do not remember and so I have made an appointment to see her 3 days from now.
I actually do have a 3 entry visa as I was originally going for longer but I actually said to my friend that he would not need one as we would be visiting Vietnam and Cambodia.
I am now not sure, I think strictly you are right but in practice I think I have read that it will be alright. We are arriving very early at Heathrow, more than 4 hours before takeoff. I think I will have a test run of buying an Air Asia ticket from Bkk to say Hanoi and so if necessary I hope we could buy one at Heathrow for my friend. Then later cancel the ticket or if I plan it right then maybe I will purchase ticket for both of us and use then.
Can anyone confirm that I could do that at Heathrow please?

PompeyPete, thanks I will have a look at Trip Advisor
  • I went straight to the Royal Thai Consulate web site which states the following
    Tourist Visa Exemption
[FONT=Arial,Arial][FONT=Arial,Arial]Passport holders of the countries listed below are not required to obtain a visa when entering Thailand on an international flight for tourism purposes provided their stay in Thailand does not exceed 30 days. If such foreigners enter Thailand at Immigration Checkpoints which border neighbouring countries (overland crossing), they will be allowed to stay for only 15 days each time.
Foreigners who enter Thailand under the Tourist Visa Exemption category and would like to leave and re-enter may only stay for a cumulative duration which does not exceed 90 days and is within a 6-month period from the date of first entry.
Foreigners entering Thailand under the Tourist Visa Exemption category must provide proof of adequate finances for the duration of stay in Thailand at the point of entry (i.e. traveller’s cheques or cash equivalent to 10,000 Baht per person and 20,000 Baht per family).

So I would question the Airline as the above clearly states that you can stay for a cumulative duration of up to 90 days if leave and re-enter.

    Any comments appreciated
    Thanks

Like I said earlier, go to the TA discussion forum for Thailand. There are a lot of knowledgeable on-the-spot folk who'll give you you sound up-to-date info.

I can tell you what I think and so can any other Tom or !!!!!! ,but you can't beat current info on what is one of the best forums on TA.
  • Hi PompeyPete,
It took me a while to negotiate to the TA forums ...... I have now posted asking for help.
I am also thinking that as Thailand allows a cumulative total of 90 days the leaving and re-enter may all be by land and if so then there would be no proof of this before booking uk / Bkk return flight ... my head is beginning to hurt!
I will post again if I obtain more information from TA
    Thanks

You should consider getting a visa for your friend. Most, if not all airlines will simply not let you fly without one.
If you insist on going to the airport without one, book the flights showing that you are leaving Thailand within thirty days prior to getting to the airport. Preferably with a full service airline's fully flexible ticket. So that you can get it refunded afterwards.
I would choose Malaysia or Singapore, as you don't need to get a visa to go there. Even this method is not watertight.
But otherwise he will not be allowed to board and your friend will think you an incompetent fool as you fly away, leaving him on the ground.
If you are entering the Kingdom of Thailand without a valid visa there is a concession which allows you to do so providing that the following conditions are ALL fulfilled.

    1. Your Passport is on a list of countries approved for this purpose. It is likely to be but please check if you are in doubt.

    2. Your visit to the Kingdom of Thailand is for tourism purposes only.

    3. You hold a confirmed air ticket to leave the Kingdom within 30 days direct from a Thai airport. Please note that you must travel by air and travel from an an airport outside of Thailand does not count.

This has been the rule for many years and nothing has changed in this regard. The only thing that has changed is that these rules are being applied more strictly than in the past. This means that you will not be allowed into the Kingdom of Thailand without a valid visa unless you can fulfil all of the above conditions.

Don't take the risk. A Tourist Visa takes one day at the London office. Hull just 30 minutes. Birmingham, same day.

I used my no fee debit card at Techcom Bank ATMs in Vietnam.
  • Thanks a lot NiftyDigits,
I have already spoken to my friend and I have looked at other comments on the internet.
We will be leaving at Heathrow on 14th of this month and living in Norwich it is not easy to travel to Hull or London, and only just enough time to post his passport to Hull.
I would feel uncomfortable posting my passport off at this late stage.
It is my friends decision what do do but I feel guilty in saying to him that he should not need a visa prior to going.
The reason for this problem is that my friend only decided last week to join me ..... and of course me not fully understanding all the implications.
I am going to investigate flights Bangkok to Ho Chi Minh for about 3 weeks after we arrive in Thailand and if my friend agrees I will book these tomorrow for both of us and we will actually use them.
Hopefully that will be enough to satisfy China Southern airline at Heathrow airport.
    Thanks again for your help

Send both the passports to Hull by Special Delivery and include a Prepaid Special Delivery envelope in the package. You should have the passports back by Thursday.
Call the Consulate prior to sending so that they are aware.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Wow this has been an amazingly useful thread for me. Am in the middle of planning our honeymoon. So far am doing 4 night in Hong Kong, then on to Bangkok ( for 2/3 nights - we've been before and LOVE Bangkok) am then trying to decide what to do - have 14 nights and way too may options (considering chang mai, cambodia, laos, myanmar and thai islands) before a further 2 nights in BKK before heading home.
Just wondered if others had two weeks and had to fit in 5 nights of Thail beaches would you stick to exploring more of Thailand or would you venture into Laos/Myanmar/Cambodia for a few nights?
yes ideally we would do longer in all the places but time is very limited and we don't mind just seeing highlights of a country before coming back for more another time!

Depends what sort of people you are? Would you prefer more Thai beautiful beaches, or tramping around Angkor Wat for a few days?

I know where I'd go, but you may hate doing historical adventuring.
Who made hogs and dogs and frogs?
