Scotland; Tricky retainer question

Hi all,
We bought a house in October last year. There were still some roofworks to be carrier out and because of this our lawyer was supposed to hold a retainer back for works not yet carried out. This amounted to £300.
The roofworks were completed over the winter so job done.
We just received a letter from the seller's lawyer asking us for the £300.
According to the seller's lawyer the £300 wasn't held back as a retainer by our lawyer and was in fact mistakenly sent to us upon completion of the sale.
The seller's lawyer was apparently in discussion with our lawyer about this but our lawyer is no longer in business (as we were informed by the seller's lawyer) and therefore they now came to us directly.
They included some receipts to show the work had been completed and a statement from the sale which appears to show that the money was indeed possibly sent to us last year.
My question is now the obvious one;
Do we have to pay the £300 even though it's now a year later?
Seeing as the sale completed over a year ago and our lawyer is indeed out of business, so we can't ask him any questions to see what's going on, I am rather curious before shipping off £300 that we actually have to as I'm not actually drowning in money.
Thanks.
