Ebe, I have a horrible sinking feeling that you might be right.... I noticed a switch with a red light on outside the bathroom door a couple of days ago. Keep meaning to speak to DH about it but forgot and this morning I decided to just switch it off and see what happens. I imagine there will still be hot water from the water heater being on this morning but we'll need to investigate. On the plus side - our bills should go down now!

The immersion heater probably will have a switch with a red light as you describe. But it's usually ( not always ) very near the hot water tank. If you have an electric shower in the bathroom then it's likely that the switch outside the bathroom is for the shower. Easy to check - switch it off, run the shower, if it either doesn't work at all, or else only gives cold water, then you know that switch is for the shower. But still worth checking the immersion heater as well to make sure it's not on.
  • lets kick off with this from npower. 'Some of our tariffs and products require your meter to display two or more readings. Examples of these are Economy 7 and Economy 10.'

    https://customerservices.npower.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/472/related/1/session/L2F2LzEvdGltZS8xMzg2MDY4NDEzL3NpZC9RWmhNV1RHbA%3D%3D

perhaps that is a old page but I would be very suprised if they cant deal with a Economy 7 meter.

as you sound confused perhaps you did not explain it correctly - did Npower come out and look at the meter ?

Now I have had Economy 7 with British Gas for ten years and sure enough on the bill it does not mention ' Economy 7 ' but they do give two readings

Electricity day and Electricity night and as I use more night time usage than day time usage I save a fair bit

Please note these are the new fixed rates for BG ' after the price increase '

BG Day 19.824p - Night 8.264p as I thought this was now overpriced I have switched to The CO-OP Day 13.556p - Night 6.982p { fixed to March 2015 } .You don't need to be a expert to work out its far cheaper.

so what is the unit price on your bill for day and night ?

What does surprise me is when you mention ' standard tariff ' as that is likely to be the most expensive tariff you can have and you would have to be crazy to stay on that tariff.

I looked on http://www.scottishpower.co.uk/ but they have the unit price well hidden

but they do have information about the diffrent type of meters

    http://www.scottishpower.co.uk/support-centre/billing/provide-your-meter-reading/meter-reading

If I was you I would make bloody certain that ' they are using your usage ' as its not clear from your posting that ' the meter was read on the first day you moved in ' .

If that bill is accurate and it is your usage then it does appear to be very high indeed - yes I know usage goes down in the summer but it looks well above average.

Perhaps I have missed something but its not clear if you have Gas Central heating or not - have you checked ?

My flat is far smaller than your House but I have Gas Central heating.

Yes the prices take a bit of finding, here's a link to Standard, and other products, just click on product, then scroll down to view prices.
