Refernce from previous letting agent

We are moving to a new let,
As part of this is referencing (already payed nearly £500 to reference two people to the new letting agent, rip-off number one). However they want a reference from the letting agent from the house before our current one. The letting agent of that property is asking for a fee to provide this.
Isn't that information covered under the data protection act, therfore I could just ask for the reference. Do they have the right to withold the information?

It is entirely up to the agent whether they want to write a reference or not.
Or to charge for their time if they do.
You could ask the landlord to provide a reference instead?0
