Absolutely lesson learned. The annoying thing is we went to that garage on a recommendation. I suspect him being paid upfront was our downfall and 2 young(ish) girls who he thought wouldn't notice a shoddy job. He had some quite nice cars in being repaired which also reassured us!
So yes lesson learned! fingers crossed I wont be in that position again though....
Thank you to all who have provided helpful advice0 -

Unfortunately, I don't want to come across as sexist, but garages do this all the time because they assume women don't really 'get' cars. You regularly hear of stories with females getting well and truly ripped off with car jobs and it always sickens me. My missus who knows a fair bit about cars had some cowboy mechanic try and tell her that a head gasket on her car had blown (despite the fact it was quite obvious that the coil pack had gone). Once she started speaking to him properly, and not in a manner that she was clueless, he quickly changed his tune and quickly modified the final price for the job. Suffice to say we went elsewhere.0 -
......How do I stand if I contact the insurance after work has been carried out?
If you don't now want to pay all the "proper" costs arising from this, then you need to inform your insurer ASAP.
Explain the full facts, as they will find out when they inspect the car/get photos etc.0
