Washing Machine.

My mother bought a washing machine from Currys 26/08/2011.
Today it has decided not to work , she did not get an extended warranty , would she be able to get it fixed free ?
Or is just over two years a reasonable time for it to last ?

Have you actually tried googling the symptoms?

You may be able to deal with the issue better if you can be clear about the actual problem.

If the fault is inherent (rather than from accidental damage, misuse such as overloading the washing machine, or fair wear and tear) then the retailer you bought it from will have to repair, replace or refund (possibly partial to account for your use of the machine).

However after 6 months from purchase the law assumes that any fault is not inherent, so the retailer may choose to do nothing unless you prove that the fault is inherent.

As for whether 2 years is reasonable, that will depend on various things such as how much it cost etc. Personally I'd expect a washing machine to last more than 2 years, but if it was a very cheap machine then maybe not.

It proved to expensive to repair , so they have offered my mother £150 towards a new one , it took quite a few phone calls / emails , but i reckon its not a bad result ..
  • Well done, that sounds like a fair outcome. I expected them to put up more of a fight.

My recommendation is that if it has a plug on it,buy it from John Lewis
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Why? Currys have done the right thing here, I don't see how it could've gone any better if it had been from JL. OP got £150 for a two year old machine which unless it was a machine over £400 originally is a reasonable amount.

Personally I'd say quite a bit lower than £400 (£300 perhaps) but my £500 machine is still going after 12 years.....so perhaps i'm biased!

Neither it nor my 30 year old cooker match the rest of the kitchen. Years ago I wanted to replace them for that reason but decided I'd wait until they broke before doing so (as sods law is that the replacements will break after a year!). I'm still waiting :D
