Question about 7 day switch and Direct Debits

Hi

Tomorrow I am switching from Santander to Halifax. Hopefully my direct debits will start as of tomorrow being paid from my new Halifax account.

One of the bills I pay by direct debit goes out on the 4th of the month. Its for a mobile phone and I would like to pay it from a totally separate account. After the 4th is there any reason why I can't call Vodafone and give them another set of account details, so that the January payment goes out of another bank. Or will this cause problems?

What I am sort of asking is how does the switch service work with regards to direct debits? Does the new bank contact all the people I pay via direct debit and given them the new sort code and account number or its there some sort of system were the banks just forward payments between each other?

Thanks as always in advance.

Alex

  • Are you starting the switch tomorrow or is tomorrow your switch date? If you're starting tomorrow your payments will go from Santander this week and from next month it'll be Halifax.

  • Hi

Thanks for your reply. Tomorrow is the completion day.

  • Your Santander account will close tomorrow in that case, and everything will be paid by Halifax.

  • You can do what you like for the January payment as long as you give enough notice to Vodafone.
It will not affect the switch in any way.

What happens with d/d 's for 13 months after the old account is closed is that they are sent to the new account rather than being returned to the originator as account closed.
