My current car is supposed to be lighter and more fuel efficient with 'crazy' fuel claims urban is giving me 29mpg but it's still running in with only just turned 1000miles on the clock, at 70mph it is only doing 2000rpm , some reviews on the web suggest the GTD is not much better on fuel although is better.
Is it a diesel or a petrol? There was an interesting thread on HonestJohn a while back, about how long diesels can take to be run in. There was a mechanic on there who said they can take even up to 50k miles before they're truly run in and apparently you will see slow but constantly improving MPG figures up to then. Mine is well past that, clocking in at a healthy 112k miles, so my running in worries are over :D

You're still being a bit odd.

Someone made a humorous quip about daihatsus being slow cars and getting stuck behind them, you took great umbrage to this and accused them of having an issue with their own car ownership. You then did the same when I quipped that you were overly protective of a niche car manufacturer!

You seem to have a bizarre way of conversing with people who don't vehemently share your opinion on things.
A humorous quip? Hurrah hurrah, eh? Anyway, I didn't take umbrage at the fact they made a comment about it being a slow car, I just didn't see the relevance of he said, at all... unless he was trying to let everyone know he likes to drive faster than the speed limit on country lanes, which is his choice.
I don't expect people to share my opinion on things, we all have freedom of choice, but I don't really understand why it was necessary to put my comment down or mock me for recommending a car which will give decent fuel consumption for a petrol. That is what the original post asked for I believe. Maybe I should read it again and check whether they asked for a 'Humorous quip'... Perhaps it did... Chin chin old bean.

Another odd response - in your world you're not allowed to make a light hearted response to something unless previously invited to? Sounds a bit authoritarian tbh and I think you might be in a small minority who think that is normal behaviour.

You also seem to have a habit of signing off all your responses with irrelevant and ill suited one liners too, almost as if you realise you're posting guff and are trying to take the attention away from the fact. Like I said, you're a funny guy.

Petrol, the 1st run back home after collecting it seemed to suggestcombined to urban figures, since then the majority of the miles have been to and from work, with last Thursday taking 1 hr to travel 8 miles, so even with stop start, the return was not good, but looking at the last car's 3 previous MOTs, I'm only doing less than 7k miles per year, so even at book figures that's 68 gallons over the year or £30 a month.

I was making a joke regarding your use of the term 'Humorous quip', if you hadn't worked out. It's the kind of thing you'd hear some Tory boy say "oh well, y'know it was just a Humorous quip from the Eton days, a bit of casual sexism never hurt anyone ol' chap".

But regarding what you initially said I have no problem with people making jokes but a joke is usually funny... like Comedians tell jokes. News Readers tell you when there's been a plane crash... etc etc It just seemed like he was mocking my recommendation imo and I was unsure as to why it was necessary. The OP asked for a recommendation, I gave it and was ultimately mocked for that.

Maybe that's just the initiation eh? What's the Eton way, Gideon? :D Ahh, finished off with a nice one liner for you! :D Hurrah! hurrah!

Does stop start really help with the fuel economy? I remember driving a 3L Lupo I wanted to buy with it's stop start and the seller was never convinced that it really helped if your trip was in an urban area but he thought it might help on a longer run...

Jeez - Three paragraphs of barely coherent waffle there. Pretty much proved what I said in one hit though!

Im sure you thought you were being very witty, but safe to say we can now add a bizarrely misplaced case of class snobbery to your already obvious traits of zero sense of humour and paranoia.

Aside from that you come off as quite a well rounded guy!

I suppose technically it does, in practice perhaps nothing to write home about, but I suppose it fudges the emissions tests, so the VED is lower.

Fair do. I guess it must save some fuel logically, would like to see real world tests though.

No it is more about emissions and not economy. Not sure how stop start would help on a longer run unless lots of traffic I guess?

Use of stop start has allowed certain manufacturers like BMW to achieve incredibly low CO2 scores
  • Just to clarify I am cutting down my number of journeys rather than the distance per journey. As I live in a rural area my shortest journey is at least 6 miles, and usually much longer.

I wanted the information primarily to ensure that when I change my car I get something that isn't worse cost wise. I would take into account insurance, tax etc. but as a 60 year old female with a clean driving record most small/medium sized cars seem similar in these respects.

I am looking to get something 3-5 years old, and haven't ruled out another diesel, but have read somewhere that they are less cost effective if your yearly mileage is under 15000 miles per year.
