Builders bags. The thing sand comes in. I think a full bags is 700kg 9f coal. Works out about 10-20% cheaper.

I'd love to but I just wouldn't be able to store it without ruining the look of the back yard. She would have a fit if I even suggested it.
Their briquettes price is crap too, I can get that at 2.60 for lignite briquettes and I'd estimate 100 for £200.

I've never seen or heard of lignite briquettes. How do they perform against peat briquettes and/or coal?

Hi Laura, I was thinking of doing the same last year ripping back boiler out for boiler stove then I found a company who actually make a stove door which attaches over the face of your open fire. What this does is it turns your open fire back boiler into like an inset stove, you have top and bottom air controls just like a stove, the door increases the heat output of your backboiler and also reduces coal usage. The door is a boru doras firefront and i purchased one and am very impressed with it, it cost me £300 but worth every penny, if you need to know more please write back and i don't work or have anything to do with them i am just a happy customer, thanks Dee :)

We have one of these and it is excellent. We got a back boiler put IN and kept our existing fireplace. Husband tells me savings are significant but don't ask me what! I notice the heat holds in the house much better than the oil heating. We were toasty warm all winter :)

My house is the same we had a constant draught going through the house and since the door has been fitted this has ceased and the house is a lot warmer. I was going through a 25kg bag of smokeless a day with the open fire now it's 100kg a week so a saving of 3 25kg bags a week and more heat to boiler and house. 😀
