I didn't realise coal was cheaper at the moment. I would have said natural gas all the way. Given that our coal fire is so efficient at heating rads I'm going to try and run it more often in the cold months because we seem to go through so much oil.

I always thought that people from here were more cost conscious than elsewhere. I didn't think this fashion for stoves would ever over-ride the need for efficiency in central heating systems. It just goes to show how wrong I can be and how much of an influence fashion is.

Having spent £900 on a new fireplace and another £1,250 on a new oil boiler I think I'm stuck with that particular dual system for the time being. Truthfully though I'm pretty happy with the arrangement. If I was on the main gas line I would think differently. I think I'd be getting rid of the oil and putting natural gas in.

Remember it's much cheaper to buy your coal in bulk. If you have the space. Tonne or more at a time.

I've only got a half ton bunker. :(
  • Put the other half tonne outside the bunker?

We wouldn't be able to do that for various reasons. Poor health being one of them. I couldn't transfer the coal to the bunker when the time came to do it and we certainly wouldn't want 5 x 50KG bags sitting in the back yard. Our cats would be all over them and then we'd have little black paw prints everywhere throughout the house.

    5 x 50kg is 250kg?

It's a lot more expensive to buy in bags.

Tonne sacks are the way to go.

Can you give some recommendations of where to buy coal in bulk please?

Shop around, I'd buy a bag and give it a go before ordering a full tonne.

Also most places ask you do unload yourself.

Can be difficuly with two one tonne bags.

    I don't think I've ever seen a ton sack.

I'd love to take advantage of this but I just don't have the facility.

Builders bags. The thing sand comes in. I think a full bags is 700kg 9f coal. Works out about 10-20% cheaper.
