If not then my guess would be graphics card/chip. If card then just replace, if chip, add graphics card. If you can't replace/add graphics card for any reason then motherboard would have to be replaced.

About 20 to 30 quid for an older PC I wouldnt spend to much as its clearly not worth it, but as said swap the monitor over as it may not be the monitor, Ignore my first post at your cost.

Agree with Asus, it's best to diagnose the source of the problem first, my post was simply some of the options depending on the possible diagnosis.

    hi Gang
the tale continues, took the panels off the PC and Jiggled about abit and Hey Presto it works!
i have got picture on the monitor but cannot use the mouse, i have tried it with another mouse but no dice.
now if i can get the mouse working, it shows that i need to put in the password for Windows.
the lady who gave me the PC has her name in and there are 2 letters in the password box, if i am able to use this and get into Windoews all well and good. but if not the lady who gave me the PC was moving so i may not be able to ask her for the password.
    Cheers

Personally I would get into the Bios and make sure the boot order is from CD first and insert an XP disc and do a complete fresh install as she may of left persoanl data on the PC, just do a complete format when prompted any drivers for display so on and so forth can be got later. I wouldnt bother to nosey around in a PC that someone hadnt cleaned its a bit invasive. :)
