Have they got TRV's on them and did you turn them off recently??

Yes, they do. All are turned up to the max.

In the summer months - heating off - do you have the TRVs fully open?

Last time the heating system was used (before the warmer months of 2013) did you have same/similar problems?

Have you had any work done on the system (i.e. rad removal)?

Approximately how old is the system (are the TRVs of the same 'vintage')?

Yes, they do. All are turned up to the max.

Have you closed them down at all ??

TRV's are known to 'stick' - even if the head tells you they're at 'max' the 'pin' may be stuck in the off position.
May be worth taking the heads off the TRV's and check that the pin can move freely - plenty of 'how to' videos will show you how to do that.

sounds like the rads need bleeding to me
  • I've bled every rad in the house. All leak water immediately - no air. I don't touch the TRVs during the summer months - they were all as gthey are now. The system is 8yrs old and the "dodgy" rads have been like that since we moved in - 2 yrs ago.

I still recommend that you check out the pins on the TRV's, if that makes no dfference then lock down all the other rads on the circuit to try to 'push' the water to the non-working ones.
If that doesn't work then it's looking like a flush may be in order :( - but I'm sure someone else will offer you some better advice :)

TRVs do get stuck and opening them up (once you are done with the heating for that season) should allow pins to reset in the open position allowing you to adjust as needed when it's time to fire up the central heating. Obviously, if they are stuck in the closed position, they won't reset.

If the problem you experience isn't constant, I wonder if the TRVs are the issue. Ruski may have called it correctly. I would target the worst perfoming rad, isolate it, take it outside and give it a good flush with water. Hopefully a load of black gunk will come out. Dry off, reinstall, cross fingers and test. If it works, repeat on the other rads. An eight year old system (assuming it's a closed system) doesn't sound that old to me but if it did not have inhibitor added..... Actually, might be a good time to add some anyway (once you have cracked the problem).

    Good luck.

I had an issue when I added a rad to my system that an existing rad stopped working. I turned off all rads then opened the 'dead' one fully, went out for a couple of hours (to prevent me tinkering lol) and when I returned it was hot. I have have now opened up all rads (not fully though ofc) and the system works perfectly. I think it was air trapped in the manifold as when I bled the rads I got water right away like you.

Have you tried turning off all rads and just having the dodgy ones on as previously sugested?

When you bled the radiators did you bleed the pump as well? My son had a similar problem which was solved when we removed air from the pump
