How important are the windows updates?
Some of the files seem rather large and I don't want to waste my disc space on unnecessay updates.

If they're "critical" or high priority updates then very important. The download may be large but that doesn't mean it will take up a lot of disc space, much of it will be overwriting. But they're just as important or even more important than anti virus updates.

Thanks superscraper - didn't know that about overwriting.

Better go and have a cup of tea and a piece of cake while I download them, oh sod it they're big files - two pieces of cake!

    Cake - Tea - Cake

Now there's my definition of a balanced meal. :D

  • It is important to download ALL updates when Microsoft pushes them onto the Windows Update service. Because hackers aka bad guys will find out what was fixed and then try to get into your system that way.

Yep never mind running out of disc space you don't want the pc turned into a zombie.

What about updates for things I don't use - eg windows messenger or media player?

If you don't use them you can uninstall them from "add/remove windows components" under add/remove programs. Otherwise it may be worth updating even if you don't use them in case there are any exploits hackers could take advantage of in them. Better not to risk it.
