When you registered, what were the terms of the contract? Most gyms have a minimum 12-month contract when you join up (some have 3-month contracts).

In the majority of cases you need to give them 30 days notice to cancel your membership (provided you have fulfilled the minimum contract term).

If you give us some more information then we may be able to help.

my friend owns a gym, and the "insider" tips are..

1/ Go in and pay the outstanding amount (there is no getting away from this i'm afraid).
2/ "Acceptable" early termination reason are; You have received a severe injury to your back or have been diagnosed with a heart problem (they wont want to take the risk of you training there), or that you are relocating for work overseas (say overseas so they dont try and tell you that you can use another local gym in the chain).

Some gyms, but not all, will allow you out of the contract early if you pay a small penalty, usually 2 months membership - however if you are certain you are not going to go back, it will be better in the long run to bail out.

OR why not just start going and get the benefits?? ?? The gym is not a money wasting place if used in the right way!

Dont put off the payments though - they have a right to chase these and you dont want to end up with CCJ's.
I never missed a payment :T , I paid off all my credit cards :T , I paid of all my loans :T , i have a work mobile :T - but am now "medium" credit risk
