Do insurers care about additional driving qualifications?

I'm on the hunt for car insurance again, and in the last year got my B+E license and was wondering if that'd make any difference in terms of premiums?

I haven't seen any forms that ask more than auto/full/provisional, so I'm assuming it's unlikely?

It isn't classed as a qualification - these are driving classes. The only true qualification I have seen relevant is the Advanced Driving course, and not all insurers are prepared to provide a discount.

    Are you feeling ok?

Do you have anything productive to add to the thread?

What were the previous log in names that you used previously?
  • I am member of the IAM as well and they have got their own insurance group.
Do not want to name it as it might irritate publicity laws...
Anyway my insurance is almost half price now as it was with other crooks!
Driving since 1988 with c+e cat.

I guess you have to find an insurer who recognises these qualification.

E.g. if you're a black cab driver you shoulds really stick to dedicated cabby insurers and not use a regular one who will charge your several thounsand pounds. A proper taxi insurance will look at the number of years you've been working which a regular isnurance won;'t

In my experience insurance companies used to give discounts for advanced drivers, but not any more. Even blue light trained drivers don't get any discount.

Ah well, that's a pain. I'd have hoped insurers would have provided some recognition for having passed a stricter test at a later date.

No they don't "own" an insurance group. They have an "affiliated" broker they advertise to members but do point out they don't guarantee to be cheaper. Get a quote from the same broker (via their "ordinary" site

They only will give the discount if you pay an annual fee (min.£32) on top to the IAM, so you need to add that in to any quote to compare.

And they will give the "discount" for anyone in the IAM members family, irrespective of them being an "advanced" motorist! (Do you smell a rat?)

If you google iam insurance discount you will find plenty that offer discounts if you have passed the advanced test, but you probably will find going elsewhere using the MSE guide combined with cashback the cheapest.

I have IAM. I don't use the IAM affiliate insurance.

    In my experience:
    1. When I was younger, I was able to get insurance on a higher group car but only after mentioning I had my IAM test.
    2. When I have phoned round insurance companies I have received lower quotes after stating I have my IAM test.
    3. While the cost of membership may be £32 a year, I regularly save more than that on the insurance and on car rental.
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?
