I usually buy from the local garden centre but recently I have been buying from Ebay :)

You should have a nosy. I had a blueberry bush delivered yesterday, first time using that company but all seems well so far.

  • I think that the thing to watch for when buying plants online is how big the plant is. Crocus plants are usually mature which obviously doesn't guarantee anything in itself but can help with robustness. I have been caught out buying plug plants before today.

Yes this is what worries me about plugs. I like robustness!

Anyone used Jacksons Nurseries (jacksonsnurseries.co.uk) before? They seem to be less dear than Crocus for equivalents (some half the price)?! Burncoose Nurseries (burncoose.co.uk) also came up when 'Google-ing!' Anyone have experience of them? Seem to be the place for Rhodies & Camellias.

Perhaps I'll give them all a call and see what their customer service is like.
New to this, please be patient with me!

I've not used Jacksons, but they are in a 'cheap' area of the country and have a physical presence, which are positives. Their web site is good, as is the size of pot they supply.

I have visited Burncoose and their reputation is fine, though they are not the cheapest. I assume you know that your soil will be suitable for rhodies & camellias, or they will be even more costly!

As you talk of having shade, I'll give this place a plug. It gets good reviews and I used to see the owner at plant fairs etc.

Have been using them for years and are very good. A few times plants have arrived with problems (delivery issues) they have always sent out replacements. Pretty good prices and a good range with freebies thrown in on orders...

I can 2nd that on both counts, prices are pretty good, but as with most bare rooted plants they can be quite small and I too have had them arrive unusable.

Parkers used to have a few nurseries open to the public. They still do, but no longer carry the catalogue stuff instore although there are still bargains to be had. I was in the 1 at Anwick near Sleaford only this last weekend.

Mt advice is to try again to find the next nearest nursery to you, although they are rapidly disappearing as newcomers to gardening seem to want and be prepared to pay for plants in full growth and the ability to be able to plant them in summer.

Instant gardeners, if I can say that without it appearing too derogatory. :A
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

Yes my soil is pretty acidic, though have tended to grow in pots before just because of success in the past (why break the mould and all that!) Great, I'll have a look at plants for shade, sounds ideal.

Now also looking for others - for good Christmas gifts. Like giving plants and trying to instil green fingered enthusiasm into others!

I generally tend to use Thompson & Morgan and garden bargains too. Never had any problems with either

This might be a bit late for the op but I just spent 67p for 90 quids worth of plants from Thompson and Morgan. You can change 5 quid of Tesco points to a 15 quid voucher. You can only spend 45 quids worth of vouchers per order, so i had to split that into two orders. If you join their mailing list the often send mails saying when it is free postage, so if you order then like I did today you can get it all for free then.

I thought even if half the plants don't make it I have 158 plants, and 9 raspberry canes coming in march/April now for 67p.
