But I need money saving advice from a Geek.
OK real story. The power lead for my Dell Inspiron 510m has died and I need a new one. Two questions. Is an OEM one just as good or would the geeks advise sticking to the Dell brand?
Of prime importance is 'Where To Buy?' Suggestions on this point really welcomed
Many thanks
Kevin

Sure it is the lead, not fuse, or motherboard/battery/connection fault?

Checked fuse it's fine. The little green light on the adopter is not lighting up,that's why I'm thinking it might be the adopter.
My only fear is that there might be two faults: the power adopter AND the laptop itself. I say this about the latter because I can't detect any power in the computer, it doesn't even flicker if I try to turn it on.
I find it difficult to understand both going together. I'm only hoping the battery is completely drained

If the light is out, and fuse is ok, then it does sound like the transformer (unless there is a break in the mains cable), but it is unusual for them to fail.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

My adapter went on my Fujitsu laptop a couple of weeks ago. It was probably because I had wound the excess cable around the adapter so many times that I caused a break in the wire somewhere.
Have a look at Ebay. I got a brand new OEM adapter and cable on there for about £10. If you can't find a Dell one, then a third party one will do fine.
Make sure that the input voltage is suitable (normally it'll say 100-240V), and that the output voltage and current are IDENTICAL to your existing adapter. Finally measure the diameter of the jack so that you don't get one thats too big or too small. For example my Fujitsu had output of 16V and 2.5A - so these were the key figures I had to look out for. Naturally your output voltage and current requirements are going to be different to mine, but they are normally written onto the adapter itself.
Maplins to some replacements and there are plenty on Ebay.Lack of money is the root of all evil.

If I remember rightly dell lappy power adapters have a code number something like PA - 12 - so you can get the correct one if you choose not to buy a dell branded product.0

if the battery is completely flat, then you wont get a flicker from the laptop.
Personally i'd get one off ebay - check out
