What do I do here? Cash on collection

I listed a large item on buy it now, the buyer has paid but my paypal showed the words cash on collection. They have paid by e cheque which doesn't clear straight away.

More importantly I listed it as will not ship, buyer collects but they have send a mobile phone number for a courier. I don't let couriers collect due to a bad experience I once had. I also prefer buyer to examine goods, as any problems can be sorted out there and then.
What should I do?
Chances are, they are going to argue the courier is collecting on their behalf..

Refund and email the buyer explaining its cash on collection only.

If you accept paypal and the item goes missing you will be responsible for refunding the seller.

Yes, definitely refund. They can't argue to ebay regarding a courier as you've stated in your listing cash on collection.

If he'd wanted to know if you'd be willing to send it via courier, he should have asked before bidding & not now be expecting you to use up your time & phone call cost in trying to arrange a service that you're not offering.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

The 'cash on collection' option is always a gamble , and this time it hasn't paid off.

All you can do is as above, refund the payment (you will eb charged 20p by paypal for doing so) and then either try and talk the buyer into collecting themselevs or agreeing to mutually cancel.

Worse case scenario is that buyer refuses a mutual and you get left with the FVFs and poor feedback- but as I said cash on collection is a gamble that doesn't always pay off.

  • Forgetting the payment issue, it's more the collection by the purchaser that I was keen to ensure.they want to use their own courier but I like buyer to inspect goods before taking them. They paid by echeque which takes time to clear anyway

Is there a possibility then the item is not as described?

Either way buyer has a right to a refund, or can make a fraudulent INR .

If you are happy to risk the paypal on collection scam, and I have done so in the past, just tell them a courier is fine as long as they are going to bring their own wrapping and box and will arrive at a time that you designate as suitable for you. Just remind them item is not boxed and you will not wrap or prepare this for a courier, as if that was possible you would have listed it with a courier yourself.

I'm not sure why you are asking was it not as described?

    Probably because you said
I like buyer to inspect goods before taking them

    ;)
  • I think that's so the customer agrees that the item is as described before money changes hands, so they can't claim item isn't as described later on.

I had a buyer argue that the colour of a necklace I ebay-ed was a few shades off that shown in the photos, even though I checked the colour on a couple of different devices (after making sure the white balance and lighting were perfect) before uploading and included in the description: 'The colour of the necklace may appear somewhat different in real life than it does on your screen, by purchasing this necklace you are accepting that there may be a small colour difference.'

1 of the photos also included the necklace next to some easily recognisable objects for easy colour comparison (The 'A' from an ASDA carrier bag, a piece of printer paper....among other things with text saying to make sure that the items on screen looked the same colour as the real life versions, otherwise the colour of the necklace in the photo wouldn't be the same as the colour in real life.

It was an open and shut case that they opened 32 days after postage and about 30 after they had received it. I won it pretty much instantly, but it was still very annoying.....
