Santander direct debit change

Need a little advice please - I've got a 123 credit card that I've been using for about two years. I have always paid it off in full with no problems but this month my fence came down, my roof started leaking in the utility room and my motorcycle needed work. Plus, chrimbo innit and my wife is spending like a trooper.

I've done a balance transfer for most of the owed balance (it was all that was available on that particular credit card) and I've changed my direct debit to minimum payment. I'll transfer another mini payment to cover to total sum for the month.

What worried me is that after I changed the direct debit to minimum a little message came up to say it wouldn't take effect immediately.

My payment is due in a few days and there is no way going to be enough money available to cover the full amount.

Will they honour my change or do I need to chase them? What can they do for me if I do contact them? I'll have to go into the bank if this is a problem (which I would have liked to avoid) because I only have a mobile and all their numbers are 0845.

It might well be too late to change the direct debit for the current month - depends how close to the payment date you made the change.

You'll have to ask them - and even then I wouldn't be too confident of getting a correct answer.

Thanks youse. Aye, I've called all the free or geo numbers I can find for Santander and they just keep you on hold for twenty minutes before telling you that you've come through to the wrong department and you'll have to call back on 0845 blah blah blah.

Most of these companies are adament that they want us to call 08 numbers and us customers are losing the battle. I which case I'll just have to waste even more of mine and their time going into the branch.

Feeling a bit worried about this now - I've always made all my payments no problem but this time there is no chance. What would any of you do? It's not even as if I could borrow the money from somewhere else.
  • My payment is due in a few days......

Santander needs 5 days (working days, I presume) before the date the DD comes out, if any adjustments to the amount of the DD are to be made.

The DD has to be send on it's way several days earlier, as to be in place at your bank on the due date. If the DD is already in transit and cannot be recalled any more, you might consider cancelling the DD at your bank. (Although Santander might charge you for a failed DD.)
  • Thanks, so does a failed DD go against your credit?
  • Is there anything I can do now, then? I think the payment is due on the 6th but the payment comes out on the 4th.
  • I'd call them. You should be able to manually make the minimum payment. They can normally temporarily stop a direct debit.
