hi,
I've just received my first bill to my property. its a 2 bedroom old victorian flat, I have been using 64 units a week and my first bill for 15 days is £121.00, I couldn't believe it, I was wandering if anyone knows how much they charge per unit . my meter read as follow on the 19th 19660 and as today was 19724, so it seems very high to pay that amount. if anyone has any idea of how much seems reasonable to pay ?. please help . thanks

Do you have an imperial or a metric meter? If it is a metric meter then your bill is only £42 (more realistic.)
That is, does your meter have ft cubed or metres cubed written on it?0 -
You are not charged per meter unit, you are charged per kWh. Since you don't state your supplier or tariff, how can anyone tell you the cost?No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Hi,
Thanks for the replies, I've checked and the meter is a Actaris and it has a M3 written on top. my supplier is British gas and I've spoken to them today and said that based on the reading given my consumption is 120 pounds for 15days, its far too much. I was wondering if it might be related to the old boiler thats in the flat?.
Thanks0 -

gas could easily be £120 for 15days, you do not say what your usage is, if you have a hot water boiler on most of the day and the central heating, you could be using loads, so £60 a week is not that surprising if that were the case.
What do you use a lot, heating how long for, cooking and other big gas equipment?0 -
You have used 724-660=64 cubic metres in 9 days.
Gas calorific value is 39MJ/m^3, and a unit (1kWh) is 3.6MJ, so you have used:
64*39/3.6=693kWh
That's not an outlandish amount of gas, so what about the price:
My tariff is 4p/unit and 31p/day standing charge, so that amount would cost me:
693*0.04+9*0.31= £30.51 for the 9 day period you have meter readings for. That would be £50.85 for 15 days at the same consumption rate.
£121 sounds steep, I doubt your tariff varies from mine by that much.
What are the meter readings they use on the bill, are they estimated?
Are you sure you're not paying for the previous occupants gas?
Did anyone read the meter on the day you moved in?
Is 15 days the period the bill covers, or time you've occupied the flat for?0 -
Can't make sense of your figures as the £121 bill you have recieved cannot, ( I hope), be just for the 10 period 19th Nov - 29th Nov with Start Meter read of
19660 & End read of 19724 - 64 units used
You say you have a "Metric" Meter- On this type each unit recorded on the meter produces a bill for very close to 11.2 Kwh, So:
.......................................................................................................£121 Bill
Less 5% VAT £20.16........................................................................£ 100.83
Less Service Charge of say 30p a day x 10 days,l £3........................£ 97.83
So if £97.83 is the cost of 64 meter units used ( 64 x 11.2 = 716.8 Kwh) to be charged for, the cost of each Kwh is an astounding 13.6pence when the usual cost of gas is less than 5pence
Please post the Start & End meter readings on the actual bill, the Service charge, the number of Kwh charged and thier unit price - The above figures suggest that BG are by mistake chargeing you for an "Imperial" meter which charges 31.5Kwh for each meter unit0 -
64 metric meter units will cost about £35 (including standing charge.)
If you were not charged £70 for the first two weeks then either you used a lot more, you are paying for a reading from before you moved in or British Gas think you have an imperial meter. When they told you the £121 was correct had you told them you have a metric meter?
64 meter units x 11.2 = 717 kWh. At 4.5p per kWh = £32.260
