Ryhl - Is it as bad as I have been told?

I have been told to stay away from Rhyl, as it is the pits!
I was going to spend the day there with my kids, but after looking at a few web blogs, I don't know wether to bother?

Has anyone been lately?

Thank you for any replies!

I have only been once when I was younger with my family and my aunts family. The trip was to mainly visit the sealife centre and the highlight of the day was watching the seals being fed. So we waited around all afternoon till the show time and we were all not all all amused to see a 6ft man walk in with a seal costume on with a bucket of fake fish :rotfl:

I still laugh about that today 10 years on :rotfl:

Sorry no up to date reviews I am afraid although we only stayed overnight in Rhyl when we went :p
Wife to a great husband and mum to 4 fantastic kids 9,8,4,3 they drive me mad but I would do anything and give everything for my family :grinheart

It was pretty nasty when I last visited - lots of shabby amusement arcades, seedy looking tattoo parlours, and the sea sort of obscured by some "thing" they'd built along the prom. No worse than most seaside resorts that have had their day, but without the nice regency architecture, pier, or pretty coastline that some of those resorts still have. You can still get decent fish and chips though!

Have spent many a wet holiday on grotty caravan sites in that region, but just go a few miles inland and it's lovely.
  • i really wouldn't bother wasting your time and money - sorry rhyl.
it has deteriorated over the years and has become a very 'rough' place.
for a taste of wales, there are much better places to choose from. what were you looking for?

    Hello again!
    Sorry for not answering sooner!
I wanted to take my boys to the funfair, but my sister says not to bother, as it is full of gangs.
We will go to Conway Castle one day, and another day is planned for the Welsh Mountain Zoo.
I loved Wales as a child (my late father was Welsh) and it seems such a shame that the place I used to got to, has got so bad!

Hello again! I thought I would update.
We did go to Rhyl for the day, and it wasn't as bad as people have said!
We went in the Seaquarium, which the kids ran through in about 10 minutes.
The shops were ok, but the gifts were the same wherever we went.
The Skytower was good (and scary)
There was not much for the kids to do though, so I wouldn't recommend anyone spending a lot of money or time to get there, not until the improvements are finished!
As for "rough" people, we went early on a Tuesday, so they might not have got out of bed yet!

It's absolutley horrible. When I was a child in the 70's it was a nice place. Don't go near it. We went and stayed about 15 mins before leaving it was that bad.

When i was a kid we had many a happy holiday staying just outside rhyl in towyn but now whenever i've gone back it's got progressively worse - large amounts of run down buildings on the sea front, the funfair is pretty delapidated and it just feels like a place very much down on it's luck.

I'd much rather carry on a bit further down the coast and go to colwyn bay or llandudno.
