Hi, can anyone help me please?!
We want to shingle our driveway, it currently has grass on, and is not really that big - but is it simple enough that we can do it ourselves, or should we get a pro in?
Some of the landscapers I have spoken to said we need to dig up the ground and all sorts, others have said all they needed to do was to kill the grass put a membrane down and shingle on top - obviously there is a price difference between these, but if it is easy enough to do ourselves, what do u think???
Any one with a step by step guide on how to lay a shingle driveway?!!!!
Thanks xxx

Im no expert on this but....just put a membrane down and shingle on top????
Surely common sense would suggest that the ground would be too soft and your car wheels would end up sinking into the ground......The first was correct. Dig up the soil.....lay some hard core....compact it down and then lay the shingle. Thats why its more expensive, because its done properlyI have nothing better to do!!!!

You definitely need to get this done properly, otherwise weeds will just thrive every year.
The previous owners of my house had cowboys to lay a block paved drive to the front & I spend a fortune each year on chemicals to kill the blighters because the ground wasn't properly prepared beforehand. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -
 Just remember to get the car out of the drive before the shingle is delivered:rolleyes:   I kid you not! My car was hemmed in for a day and a half behind a 6' heap of gravel until hubby and I could shovel it flat:oDoing voluntary work overseas for as long as it takes .......
My DD might make the odd post for me0 -
We did our own drive way you need to kill the grass remove any loose soil, hire a compactor to get ground really flat and solid then put over a membrane. we got this from a industrail supplies company its the same stuff that is put under new roads it lets water through but stops any thing growing.
Our drive is on a slope so we just need to rake it once a week to keep it looking good.
as you drive your car over the stones they get compacted so it keeps the stones tidy hope this help.0
