Two things I don't like about Win8 compared to Win7:
    - Windows 7 Mail was exactly what I wanted but the Windows 8 Mail app version is crap in comparison
    - Windows DVD Maker (for burning DVDs) is not available in Win8

One may feel that Win8 is a step forward in many ways and maybe they're right. But I don't understand the rationale of also taking steps backwards.

Neither of these apps are officially part of Windows 7.

These were moved to windows essentials which was a separate download (which you can still download) because apparently its anti-competitive to ship these kinds of apps with an OS.

They may be part of Windows Essentials but the point is are they still available in the W8 downloadable version.

Have Windows 8, install classic shell to restore the classic start menu, change the settings to boot straight into desktop mode, then you will never have to see the 'designed for touch-screen' metro screen.
