Buying a garage

Hello,

This is my first post on the MSE boards and I'm still figuring out the interface, so bear with me!

I run a small business and could do with some extra storage space. I'm thinking about buying a garage / lock-up, but I'm unsure about some aspects of the process and don't want to waste any money (or time) on unnecessary exercises.

I plan on paying a solicitor to do the conveyancing. But is it sensible to get a structural survey? In my experience, surveyor's reports are of limited value, and garages are pretty simple structures. Other than checking the roof, drainage etc myself, is there anything a surveyor might catch that I might not?

Any advice or experiences of others much appreciated.

I have a property with a garage in a block, frankly the surveyors report on the garage was pretty useless, it stated that a willow tree was very close to the block, I could see that!

The next door garage was sold individually, I don't think they had a survey.
  • Thanks for that. It's good to have some reassurance that I'm not just being tight! I recently bought a flat, and the surveyor missed all sorts of stuff that we spotted, including several leaky radiators...
