  • If the business is small business then any accounting software like QuickBooks helps a lot, it will be helpful in saving time too.

    Tar guys.

I put up an ad a while back just to see what the responses were and I bit the bullet and I'm getting a teenager in.

Have to admit I don't miss school as shes obviously told her friend about it as I've had another application last night from a girl the same age/same school so I had a hunch and facebooked her and the person I'm taking on is friends with her...

Im not sure what she expected she sent me a very long and well worded email saying how much she'd done here and their etc... kind of back stabbing Id say anyway. I'm kind of thinking to not mention it but I do kind of feel like she has a right to know. Maybe I'm over thinking it.

I'd not mention it...the last thing you want is to be in the middle of a teenage squabble.

Also, I don't know if it's even legal to tell someone else who applied for the job...

Yea I'll just leave it. Not my place to get involved and would only cause trouble for her I guess.

Employing someone will open up a whole new area of problems such as insurance, MLR etc.

    Is it voluntary work?

TBH its just going to be cash in hand till after xmas, I won't even put it through my books(It probably only be £40 max untill then anyway) just out my own pocket, then if I think its worth keeping her on I'll sort it out properly in Jan get it paid into a bank account etc.

I'm not going to over think it just keep it simple.

Ok above still applys but just researching for jan as shes a 16 year old female and it could be long term I looked into M/L as well.

So; Don't have to operate Paye unless its above £109 a week
Don't have to pay Maternity leave unless shes paid above £109 a week
Don't have to pay sick leave unless shes paid above £109 a week.
Don't have to pay redundancy if employee is no longer needed up to 2 years and then its half a weeks pay per year as shes under 22

Don't have to even register with HMRC unless I need to pay tax/NI for it; http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/payerti/getting-started/register.htm

Looks pretty simple though as long as she doesn't start working over 21 hours a week (£5 an hour) which is highly doubtful it should be straight forward.

    I will need to get employees insurance..;

Its getting abit annoying it keeps saying you need to do this if the employee is earning over £109 but it doesn't tell me what I need to do if she isn't.

  • Did I read it right that you're currently on maternity leave? If so you're not actually allowed to be working. You're only allowed 10 KIT (keeping in touch) days. I think if the tax people see you are working and getting SMP/MA they will take it back...
What's yours is mine and what's mine is mine..
  • She's self employed, which is perfectly fine from the dwps perspective, so no reclaim of SMP.

Only issue might be if her current employer has something in her contract that prevents her from operating her own business, but that's between her and her employer and won't impact on SMP.
