worming tablets

So, Rocky will eat cow poo, horse poo, rabbit poo amd cat poo, but try to feed him a worming tablet and he makes out he is being poisoned!!!
He is amazingly good at sucking off whatever I try to hide them in and spitting out the tablet, so eventually this evening I crushed the soggy sucked tablets I rescued off the kitchen floor and mixed them in with some mashed banana, which he eventually and somewhat reluctantly ate.
1 1/2 hours later, and he had vomited whatever it was he managed to scavange from behind the green telephone cabinet on our evening walk that had made him turn a bit green ( looked like chicken) onto the door mat- I am guessing he also vomitted up the banana- worming tablet paste too- it was hard to tell and I didn't want to sniff it to see if I could catch a whiff of banana
As Rocky is rather prone to worm problems, I am going to have to ring the vet tomorrow and find out when I can safely give him another dose without risking overdosing him.
Does anyone have any tips on how to get tablets down the neck of a surprisingly fussy scavanging dog?
(And as an aside, I was wondering as I was cleaning up the looked-like-chicken-vomit, the drontal for dogs tablets are shaped like bones, what shape are the drontal for cats, fish?)

I started a thread yesterday about the difficulties I am having getting my dog to take a chewable tablet. I feel your pain;)
I seem to recall that worming can be done via 'spot on' like the flea treatments - yes here - some of the flea/tick treatments also included a wormer
http://www.animeddirect.co.uk/advocate-100-for-medium-dogs-4-10kg-pack-of-3.html
http://www.animeddirect.co.uk/stronghold-120mg-medium-dog-pack-of-6.html
We have just tried the advocate on our dogs and it is just the same as the previous spot ons we have used, but with a wormer in the solution.
There is also an oral suspension
http://www.animeddirect.co.uk/panacur-small-animal-oral-suspension-100ml-10.htmlIt is a good idea to be alone in a garden at dawn or dark so that all its shy presences may haunt you and possess you in a reverie of suspended thought.

All dogs I have had have taken pills if they are in a bit of cheese. Never tried peanut butter - good idea!0

We put pills broken into bits into some meat paste and CD normally munches that happily. Although weirdly he will eat the drontal tablets.Eu não sou uma tartaruga. Eu sou um codigopombo.0

I know you say they suck off whatever you put it in, but have you tried cheese? You can mould it better and any dog I know has a lump of cheese swallowed without even biting
Break the tablet in two, don't let your dog see you doing it and see how it goes.
Otherwise, if it's a particularly tricky dog, open mouth, put tablet as far back as possible and hold mouth closed and rub their throat until they swallow.0 -
Mine are convinced millebex dog wormers are doggie treats. Far easier than the drontal ones we had before. We had to wrap the drontal in ham for any hope of getting in down them but the millebax are easy peasy.0

Thanks for the suggestions- I am glad it's not just me has this trouble!
Funnily enough, when he has been on other medication, it hasn't been such an issue, but he seems to be able to detect a worming tablet from miles away! I have tried, over the years- peanut butter, pate, cream cheese, cheese, dairylea cheese, cocktail sausages, sandwich spread, butter, cream, pork pie (last night, didn't work very well but I was running out of ideas), chicken breast, banana, and yoghurt. He will often take the worming tablet in it once, but if I try to use the same thing again he seems to get wise to it! He will suck off the coating if it is something wet, or somehow chew around it in his mouth, and always spits out the by then soggy tablet.
I suppose I could ask a neighbour with a cat if I could borrow some cat-poo, that always seems to be a bit of a delicacy for Rocky! :rotfl:
I also tried once throwing it in the back of his mouth and holding his mouth closed, but he started to look like something out of a horror film (rolling eyes, foaming at the mouth) so I gave up on that.
I am considering looking into another wormer in a liquid form or something. I will need to check with the vet, Rocky was terribly poorly with bloody diarrhoea a few years ago, and the vet suggested trying a dose of drontal, as hookworm can cause those symptoms. Sure enough, it cleared up, and I know if I am not quite prompt with his worming, he has started to get nasty diarrhoea again, so I would need to make sure any wormer would be effective with that- although it looks like most do!0 -
Just to add, I spoke to the vets today, and as an hour and a half had passed, he shouldn't have vomited up his tablets. But I can give him another dose in one month's time if I am particularly worried (or he is showing symptoms of a wormy problem). I will wait and see....0
