Sewing machine
Options
I was never taught to sew ( that's my excuse) but at the grand age of 34 I've bitten the crafting bug and have begun making some really basic filled heart cushions etc. I'm debating getting a basic sewing machine as my skills are limited and wondered if anyone can give me any pointers, I don't want one that's rubbish, but can't see the point in £100+ When I may get bored of it.

Could you try Freecycle of maybe borrow one for a week or two to try it out.Haters are gonna hate - you're not obliged to participate0

Free cycle is a good thought actually, I really do only want something basic, so was thinking about getting one from OH for Xmas but really don't want to mention it to him until I have some idea what I'm after and how much to spend. For example is this any good?

If you're after something small and basic then this one gets good reviews:

I am no expert but that looks a pretty good price as it is £79.99 at Ar**s. The reviews look pretty good too.
I bought a similar machine to this recently and offered my old New Home on freecycle. The zigzag knob had sheared off so could only stitch straight, unfortunately the person never did collect it.....if you lived in Lanarkshire you could have itHaters are gonna hate - you're not obliged to participate0 -
Have a look at second hand machines first, you want a basic machine that does straight stitch and zig zag, thats all you will ever need!!0

Hi,
I was completely new to sewing last year but asked my OH for a sewing machine for Christmas and I haven't looked back. We did a bit of research and bought the Brother X5 for around £90.
I think it's a brilliant machine and have found it very easy to use haivng never used a sewing machine before. I've not sewn clothes but it's been brilliant for craft bits and pieces, cushions etc. I would definitely recomment this machine for a beginner.0 -
Thanks for all the tips guys, nothing on free cycle at the mo, and nothing listed for a while. I suspect it may pick up after Xmas when people upgrade.
I do like the look of the JL one, and it comes in nice colours....
Still tempted by the brother at hobbycraft and they have 25% off this weekend....think we will be popping in anyway so will see if OH picks up any hints!0
