OP, did you inform DLA that you were in hospital?
DLA is only payable for the first 28 days of any hospital admission so there is a cjance of an overpayment if they were not informed0 -

See the Direct Gov website for its information on debt management and where to get free expert advice. You may find, for example, that you are advised to secure a DRO which writes off up to 15k of certain types of debt.
As detailed previously, there are priority and non-priority debts which are split because of their impact on the debtor. Not paying a credit card can result in mildly rude letters and phone calls. Not paying rent arrears, for example, can lead the person into homelessness while unpaid council tax can lead a person into prosecution.
Paying off token amounts to all and sundry while having virtually no disposable income left for anything other than subsistence living and not grasping priorities when it comes to repayments is not a proper debt management strategy.0 -
As others have stated, I think a really good idea would be to contact your local Cllr. I find that when our members get involved, debts get pulled back from bailiffs and we work to set up reasonable arrangements.I currently manage a Housing Benefit service and have been working in Housing / council tax benefit (as was) since 2001.

hi im wondering if anyone can help i had a bailiff visit and i arranged a payment plan with him but i was then made unemployed i contacted the company and asked for my first payment to be delayed and they said no and said i had three days to pay which i was unable to pay, they wouldn't accept any payment plan, the thing is a bailiff showed up today and said that i have til noon tomorrow to pay the outstanding balance of £626 which includes their cost other wise they are going to clamp my partners car, the thing is i have raised £326 so far and finding it difficult to raise any more what are my chances that they will accept that and then a further one off payment to clear the balance0

Since the debt is in both your names they can clamp your partners car - if they can find it...
How quickly would you be looking to make a further one off payment to clear the balance? If you're only talking about a short time (a few days or maybe even a couple of weeks) it might be wise to park elsewhere and use public transport meantime?
Even if you do need more time to raise the extra payment you'd be in a much stronger position to negotiate a payment plan once you've made the initial payment?
This idea is purely based on what my instinct would be in your situation, doubtless others with more experience might be able to give you better advice but that's what I'd be inclined to do.
Hope this helps, SmokeyAll my friends and neighbours helped me pack and move for free, at first I was happy until I got told no one liked me and they just wanted to make sure I left. Thanks Mum and Dad.0
