I had a couple of Online Saver accounts where the bonus had expired a few weeks back. Only a couple of quid left in them.

Just noticed the option to close the accounts online has returned. Seemed to work quickly and easily. So tidied things up a little without needing a branch visit.

Managed to close 3 old accounts.
Two others I was unable to close even though they had zero balance and had not been used for years.

Lloyds online banking also now has the facility so closed 2 there.

I renamed my accounts 'DO NOT USE' months ago. Managed to close a saver and an ISA OK. Another saver has a few pounds in it so just transfered the balance to current. Still won't let me close, hopefully it will on updating, but beats a letter any day.

Makes sense, it was silly that they let you open an account online but when it came to closing it you had to visit a branch or write off to their 'Accounts Closure Dept'. About time they re-installed this function.

edit: Logged in and tried to close an Online Saver (bonus expired) with zero balance at about 6pm today, I just logged in again (10pm) to check and Online Saver is still showing in 'My Accounts' page with message at top of page saying -
'Unfortunately we can't retrieve some of the account information you've requested right now. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause you. Please try again later.'
so hopefully the request to close my Online Saver will be carried out sometime soon (maybe overnight?) and in a day or so will drop off from 'My Accounts' page.

edit (+24hrs): Logged in today and my old unused Online Saver account has been closed.

Thanks for the post, I've had a couple of accounts that I've wanted to close for ages but couldn't be bothered with going in branch, i have been using online banking recently but hadn't noticed the close account option.

I was told this would be available months ago, but have never seen the options on my accounts (had to write to them to close an account, although mine are all done on line apparently my nearest branch is miles away!). Just looked at my account today and only have an option to close the Nominated Account (which is needed to have the Online Saver).

Hubby has no option on his Nominated Account.

I'm not aware of any requirement to hold a "nominated account".

    What's that all about?

There was one savings account which required it for interest to be paid into as I also had one - perhaps a regular saver from 2-3 years ago?

I noticed that when my Online saver got its annual interest, it was automatically transferred to my Reward account. Maybe I nominated that at the time I opened it a year ago?

I labelled my "Online Saver" accounts "DO NOT USE" as I couldn't be bothered writing letters or visiting the branch. Thanks to the OP I've now closed them :)

Also got a nice Christmas present as I closed one of them and got 4p interest! Not sure what I'm going to spend that on yet.

Stick it in another savings account and let the compound interest pay the bill for dinner at Milliways?
