Shoe repair

Options
Just want to run something by you - what do you think?
Leather (expensive, formal type) shoes split at the side - leather came away from sole. I was not sure if shoe repairer could repair but he said he could - also the heels were worn down and so he said he would replace the heels too.

Collected them last night - £22.00 And low and behold they have split again this morning after about 4 hours wear (work in an office, so not heavy use) I will take them back later on today or tomorrow, but if the split seam cannot be repaired then I obviously have no use for the heels as the shoes will have to be binned. I only had them repaired because he said he could make a solid repair. I am happy to let him try again if he wants to - but not convinced it is going to work.
Do you think I would be entitled to a full refund (he can even have the heels back if he wants !)
Thank you in advance for any thoughts.

Yes you would be entitled to a full refund as his service did not conform to contract, getting him to agree however is a different matter.

    Cobblers!!
  • Do you know the type of welting thats used on the shoes? If thats the area thats come apart. It is a case of either gluing or stitching it back together depending on the original construction method.

It should be possible to do a reasonable repair on them but they'll need to use the right method depending on the materials involved. It may be that they need rewelted but this is unlikely to be cost effective on normal shoes unless they are top end/ goodyear welted
  • Thanks all.
They were not particularly "cheap" shoes - probably around £100. So I was hoping to get away with a repair. But from what I can see he glued them. To be truthful I was not optimistic, but hoped that he had some very, very strong glue and had had enough material to get a good grip, but obviously not.

Yes, I agree bris - just a small local shop - but then again not sure that I want to swallow the £22 repair fee for a pair of shoes that last a few hours. And will have to buy another pair now too.
    I will update.
