Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router

Options
Hi,

I've just found one of these in a charity shop and am hoping it's a bit of a bargain as I've been looking for one of these. It is "2.4GHz, 802.11g".

I'm clueless though as to whether it will work!! At least I will have benefitted the charity if not!

I'd like to set it up at my sister's flat so that when I'm over there I can still get online.

Hope someone can help with these questions:

1. It doesn't have the CD-Rom to set it up - will I be able to buy this separately or get a copy from Linksys? (I'm assuming it won't work without this?)

2. At my own home I got a free one of these from AOL and they sorted out my phone line. With this Linksys one can I just plug it in and load it (if/once I get the disc!) and will it just work - or will sis have to have something done to her phone line? Is it compatible with all PCs/laptops?

Is there anything else I need to buy or do do get this set up?

Many thanks in advance for any help.

Oh, by the way, it has a strange two-pin plug but it does say it's 230V so I guess I can just get a two pin adaptor, with three prongs and it will be safe to plug into the mains?

Many thanks.

Regards,

You don't need the disk, it can be configured from internet explorer.

Is it the correct type, adsl for BT phone lines
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
  • Hi, thanks, here is a bit more of the blurb:

    Broadband router
The all in one Wireless-G Networking Solution

    Model No. WRT54GL

    2.4GHz, 802.11g

Says it is compatible with "Wireless B (802.11b) and Wireless-G (802.11g)

Says it has a "one touch set up button" (makes it sound reassuringly easy....!)

Can't find anything to do with "ADSL" on the box and there aren't any instructions.

It doesn't have the cable that goes from it to the PC - please could someone also tell me what I need to buy for this?

    Many thanks again.

Visit this webpage and download the correct user manual for your version number. It's all fully explained in the manual.

The WRT54GL router is designed for people using NTL/Virgin cable broadband rather than someone using ADSL.

It is a good router which can be updated with customised firmware (see link below) so if you don't get broadband from NTL/Virgin, it would be better to put it on Ebay and use the funds raised to buy a proper ADSL router.

If you want a cheap ADSL router, DSL Depot sell some refurbished ones at very cheap prices:

    Thanks
