Identity stolen

Not sure if this is the right place for advice.

We suspect our identity has been stolen, reasons we suspect this are strange letters in my name and my address but talking about debts and things nothing to do with us.

We have got on the phone to them and they just say our records indicate that you owe this much for this and that. I said that is nothing to do with me, I have no idea what that is.

Is there a specific place I can go to for advice please?

    Hi

I would start by getting copies of your credit files from the credit reference agencies.

This could be a case of identity theft - in which case this is a useful source of info http://www.actionfraud.police.uk/fraud_protection/identity_fraud

Or it could be that a creditor/debt collector has incorrectly traced you when looking for someone with the same name as you. If this may have happened then rather than phone up the debt collectors/whoever is writing you may want to send them the prove it letter - Letter when you know nothing about about the debt - AKA "Prove it" letter
when they send the supposed proof you would hopefully see that it relates to an address or date of birth that is nothing to do with you.
A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who give
or "It costs nowt to be nice"
  • Thanks I am on it.

There have been lots of funny things happening lately, call/letters and two bailiffs calling round.

I wish I could get to the bottom of this, or just want it to stop.

Sounds like a debt company has traced you by mistake, they'll be after someone with the same name in your area. As above says check your report, you may see addresses that aren't yours that need removing which contain the debts you're being bothered about. My dad had this happen to him.

What happened in the end with your Dad? Any other advice for me?

I am so stressed, the more I dig I think someone has been pretending to be me and that what all the letters and calls are about. We suspect we have post missing, maybe they bhave my bank statements and also tax credit letters which means they may have my NINO and who knows what else.

Jeff you looked at the action fraud link provided by Tixy ?
  • Yep been on the phone to actionfraud they seem helpful I have opened a case with them.

I have a reference number to give next time a bailiff calls round.

One of the last letters we had said if we dont pay this they will take our car. Its a bit worrying, I really want to sort this out.

Interesting they've been so explicit.... Unless they suggest the car is their security? Rarely does a DCA threaten this unless there is some lien.

What information was offered - VRM, or even make and model?

Nope it just looks like the standard they have in every letter to me. We make take vehicles even if you are not home.

I called the number on the debt collection number and in no uncertain terms said do not take away our car it is a case of stolen identity.
