Default has been added

Hi,

I am new on here so be nice please :)

I logged on to my credit file today and saw this a default on my account.

Says "Default date 27/04/2013", "Default Balance - £575" and under account status details one "8" Balance "£575" with the date of the 17/11/2013. I cleared this balance ages ago and now a default is showing, is this correct or do they have a time limit to show?

I also received no letters from them saying a default was going to be added.

Thanks.

    Hi

That is not correct - at the very least it should show a current balance of 0 to show that the default has been satisfied.

When you say you cleared it ages ago was this after April 2013? do you know when you paid it?

What sort of account/debt was this?

    Hi JimBean,

    Welcome to the MSE forums!

Do you have any confirmation that it was settled?, was this settled through an agent or directly with the creditor?
  • Hey,

It was settled on the 13th April this year. Was with CFO Lending (stupid I know) - a payday company.

    It was settled by myself.

Do you have access to your bank statements? it would be enough proof that the amount was debited from you account.

Great so it was paid before the default date on your credit file.

Is the entry on your file in the name of CFO? or a debt collector?

I would write to CFO and state that you have noticed that they have added a default on your settled credit account with them. State that the default date shown on your file is 27/04/13 but that you settled the debt with them by debit card payment(? or however) on 13/04/13 as they will be able to check from their records and so require them to remove the default entry from their entry on your file and to update the record to show that the balance was fully paid in April 2013.

You may also want to say in the letter that if they do not correct this unfair and incorrect entry on your file you will be making a formal complaint to the financial ombusdman service and the ICO.

I called CFO myself to confirm the date.

I emailed Experian letting them know it was wrong. Shall I write a letter to CFO too?
  • I called them back and they said I called them on the 30 April, not the 13th!

    Anything I can do please?

Does paying on the 30th tie in to your own records (bank statement or whatever).

If you did pay after the default date then the record should still be updated to reflect that there is no balance outstanding anymore (and that is was paid in April).

If your own records show that you paid before the default date then I write to them to state that and that the default should therefore be removed from your record.
