Did turkey drumsticks for four and nut roast for two for first Christmas with both sets of parents. Still buy turkey drumsticks at Christmas so OH gets home-roasted turkey for sandwiches with piccalilli.

Tesco do a ready-basted joint that feeds 6 in the frozen section for £5 (beware the pre-stuffed one that only feeds 4.)

I bought one the other week to do a roast and it fed 2 of us with enough left over for a curry for 4 the next night.
    Make £25 a day in April £0/£750 (March £584, February £602, January £883.66)

    December £361.54, November £322.28, October £288.52, September £374.30, August £223.95, July £71.45, June £251.22, May£119.33, April £236.24, March £106.74, Feb £40.99, Jan £98.54) Total for 2017 - £2,495.10

Got a leaflet from Donald Russell and was going to order 2 frozen turkey crowns (to feed 9-10 altogether). £36 each, even with a code, free delivery and Topcashback, this is still a lot. Do you really get a tastier meat or is it all subjective anyway. I just can't decide. We live within walking distance of Aldi, Asda, Iceland, M&S and can easily access Sainsburys and have Waitrose deliveries in place for nearer Christmas which can be amended. Decisions........OH is paying for the Christmas food but I still like to get the best deal I can though not at the expense of quality.

cheapest way is to do what I did...... marry a butcher :rotfl: but if you cant squish that in before xmas, get one from iceland, I had to do that after hubby had a heart attack last year and was off work for ages, we were skint and as I had saved on my bonus card I was 'tied' to iceland, I got the 10/12 people prepared boneless breast one ( there were different sizes) think it was £12 , anyways it was one of the nicest tasting turkeys we have had, cooked from frozen and when you follow time on box it was perfect and not dry at all and there was plenty left for the turkey and chips on boxing day when the rest of the family converged:beer: I know they do smaller depending on how many you need to feed:):):)

Cheapest way ? follow the plan below ! :)

    1) dress in a cammo suit
    2) buy a torch with a Blue light
    3) go to your local turkey grower ( at night )
    4) shine the blue light on some turkeys in the dark ( they cannot see blue light )
    5) grab what you need ( to be social ) stuff in a bag
    6) run like hell if the farmer shines a blue light on you !
    7) have a merry xmas , cheap as well !! :)
    A Bast**d I May Be ! I Was Born One !
    Whats Your Excuse ?
  • A couple of Turkey Crowns should do...good value as you are paying for all meat not bone as well.

At the cooking stage they are more economical too as they don't take as long to cook as a complete bird so less energy used.

The only time I would cook a complete bird would be overnight if we had the economy 7 system.....brings forward xmas dinner by a few hours though....more brunch really.

    Have a good time anyway.

Everyones a winner...except for the person who wants a drumstick of course!!

Just in case it bothers anyone, Aldi's frozen turkey crowns appear to be halal and from Chile.
  • We got a crown from aldi a few weeks ago, now sitting in the freezer for under £10, will just cook it slowly (defrosted) with the usual lots of veg - would easily feed six.
Other stores do turkeys for about the same price (lidl) if anyone prefers a leg.

I usually buy a 6lbish turkey crown from my butcher it is more economical and user friendly than a whole bird and we get Christmas lunch for 12 or more and leftovers for sandwiches from it we also serve pork and beef at Christmas lunch in case anyone thinks we ration the meat LOL.
