If you're buying to resell you can only be a business seller on Ebay. You also need to declare the business to HMRC.

Pros, you're a business, cons, you have to pay tax and adhere to distance selling regulations, amongst other things. As far as fees go there isn't too much between them.

Pro.. you can do as many hours as you want. Couple of items a week or hundreds a day.

Con.. Dont forget your a business and must accept returns and take returns and damaged /faulty items into account in your budget.

Not like a certain person that posted a while back who thought he could import thousands of pounds worth of stock and not pay duty etc.
Because they ordered one item from China and didnt pay taxes.

Then thought add a few pence onto the price and make a nice profit. Except no thought about tax and customs charges etc. And no thought about what % of the goods maybe faulty within the warranty period.

Doesnt take long to start working at a loss. You need to have the figures all sorted and a good profit to cover unexpected problems.

    Some excellent advice above.

I would add to reinforce the fact you need to double and triple check your costs. Only a month or so ago I was talking to someone about their ebay business and they happened to mention some figures, a quick back of an envelope job made me think they were making a loss. I spoke to them again about it, broke down the costs and without even allowing for returns , lost or unsold stock, tax and NI etx- they were losing a few pence of every item.

They had made the mistake of seeing the figures as 'buy at say £10' sell at £16 = ? profit

why is there such a big difference in fees between the 2?
having had a whirl on ebays fee calculator, if i sold a used leather jacket for £550 as a private seller then fees are approx £50 but as a bus seller they are approx £10, massive difference!

I think the calculator you are using is wrong!

I would expect to pay 30p listing as a BIN £55 FVFs plus paypal fees of £18.90 so £475.80 from which you still have to pay post and packing
