Help needed fitting a tap reviver.

Hi
I am trying to replace a kitchen tap reviver but having problems.
The instructions mention the use of spacers but these only seem to be in relation to the positioning of the washer.
The problem is with the part of the reviver that is external, which is not the same length as the one I removed. So when I try to fit the new tap handle, it rubs against the tap surrounding making it difficult to turn.
This is probably something I am doing wrong but I cannot work out what I need to do to fit the new part?
Any help gratefully received.
Thanks
M
