Tablets

I looking to buy a tablet for my 12 year old son. I was thinking of the Ipad but have been informed that the Samsung is outselling the I pad, and it seems that this is largely due to the apps; apparently Samsung offer more free apps than apple. Grateful for any opinions

You should state how much you want to spend amd whether you/he has a preference for a 7" or 10" screen. My 10yo has a 7" Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 which is mainly used for games and judging by the hours she would spend on it if we let her, loves it.
  • I have a personal preference for the ipad but the fact is that they're both decent tablets, and I'm sure your son will be delighted with whatever one you get him.

I will say:- don't count the number of apps, think about what he will want to do with it and research which one will be better for that kind of use (Maybe have better apps? Better tablet spec?). If your son wants to use the tablet for sketching semi-serious artistic drawings, for example, a tablet with one awesome drawing app will be far more useful than a tablet with a dozen mediocre drawing apps.
If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything

Samsung store does not that many apps . The Google Play store has loads and many free .
Samsung tablet outsell IPad due to more models .

    Top IPad
    Then Google Nexus 10.
    Then Samsung Galaxy 10.1
Best value probably Nexus 7 .
  • The problem is, how do you measure these things? There are many possible ways and depending which you use will dictate what answer you get.

Generally most now agree that Android is bigger than iOS but that Apple is still the largest single manufacturer with Samsung fairly quickly catching up.

Apple only sell premium products, Samsung sell a range of products from fairly basic to premium and so it really is fairly inevitable that Apple will never remain the top dog by unit counts. Porsche will never sell as many cars as Audi despite them both having supercars because Audi start at £14k where as Porsche start at nearly £40k

Both iOS and Android have thousands of free applications with many being available for both platforms.

If you are considering the Nexus 10 then be aware that a new version is due out in the next few days which should mean that the original model drops in price.

At the 7" level, I'd say the "best" tablet is the 2013 Nexus 7. For value for money I'd go for the Tesco Hudl. It's not as powerful as the new Nexus 7 but is a better spec than the 2012 model which I have.

It really depends on how much money you want to spend. You can get a cheap and nasty Android 7" tablet for around £50 while the top of the range iPad Air is over £700.

People who like Apple products swear by Ipads and most agree they are good quality but you have to decide if you are prepared to pay the premium. I bought a Nexus 7 and would comment
    1. Screen equality is excellent
    2. Access to Google Play store gives a ton of free apps
    3. Its very quick and responsive
    4. Its cheaper than an IPAD Mini (but a Hudl is cheaper but with some loss of quality)
    5. It connects seamlessly with other Google products e.g. email and calendar synch easily and smoothly

I would say Samsung outsells I-Pad due to it being cheaper! The Galaxy Tab are the big sellers and they are in a much lower price bracket than Apple. If you look at the Note tablets, they are higher priced and virtually non existent compared to I-Pads.

For me personally (for phones or tablets), the whole point of buying technology is to be useful for as long as possible. I would expect if I buy a product that it receives updates for the platform revision regularly and in a timely fashion. With that in mind I would never recommend anything other than an Apple product or a Nexus product.

The support from Samsung, HTC and a lot of the budget brands is a joke. Phones like the S2 no longer get a software update. This is despite Google slimming down the android platform to be able to get it onto budget 2013 phones!

Apple and Nexus won't support a product forever but they do roll out updates in a uniform fashion and support products beyond 24 months.

    Hi oodles141,
you haven't been back on with a list of features that you might like yet but if I had the money then I would probably buy this

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-Galaxy-Tab-8-inch-White/dp/B00EC9C2E2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1385558757&sr=8-1&keywords=samsung+tab+8

    Its an 8 inch tablet.

For me, most 7inch tablets that I have used are just that tiny bit too small.

Mrs A has an iPad mini and its a good practical size (think its just less than 8 inch?) , but its priced at the premium end of the marketplace.
The 8inch Galaxy seems great - I was playing with one for ages in Tescos the other day.
10inch Samsung and full size iPads are just too large and heavy in my opinion for continued/extended use. They feel OK in the shop but using one for any length of time is a pain in the arm! :) - again, just my opinion.

Not sure if price is a consideration for you but you could 'almost' get two Galaxy Tab 8's for the price of one iPad mini.

    Hope this helps.

Having had nearly all of the tablets via work, I would say the Samsung would be just fine for a kid.

I only use the iPad now, all the other tablets are in my desk drawers gathering dust, unless they get dragged out for testing purposes.
