Nikon D90 v D5200

Hi

I'm so confused.
I am a total amateur and want to buy a DSLR. A friend has recommended the D90 but after lots of research I am totally torn between the D90 and the D5200.

Please can someone give me some advice

The D90 is a good solid camera but it is getting rather long in the tooth now.

The D5200 is much more modern in features and output and its variable angle screen is a godsend in so many photo applications but it lacks the internal focus motor, which means it can only use the more limited range of DX lenses to full capacity.

Always consider used equipment. If you want to learn about DSLR cameras a D200 can be had for less than £200. You can then use what is saved on decent lenses (also used of course!)

I had the same decision to make last year only between d90 and d5100 I went for d5100.The advantages of d90 is it has more direct buttons to access features ISO for instance and it has a focusing motor in body meaning that it is compatible with more lenses. The d5100 has a better sensor and has been mentioned the screen can be angled. I have been very happy with the d5100. Just to confuse you there are some good deals about on D5100.

I bought the D90 when it came out, and it's an excellent camera. It was an easy decision, because it was the first SLR to finally add a video mode. I would have been left behind with any other SLR of the time.
Anyway things have moved on now, and SLRs are far better at video. The D90 only focuses at the start, so if something moves towards you for example, it'll go out of focus. Workaround is to use manual focus. I don't think the more modern cameras will have this problem.
Of course if you only want to take PHOTOS this isn't relevant...
  • thank you all for the advice.
I have gone for the D5200, so excited :)
