How hard can it be to get a website made

  • I have contacted lots and lots of webpage designers for prices and they have either promised to email me some examples with prices and haven't or given me a price of thousands of pounds for a basic website.

I have tried making one myself but because its ecommerce it really doesn't have all of the functions I need and its way to complicated and time consuming to be doing this when I don't know much about it.

This is the only thing stopping me from starting my business now I have the money waiting for the website and all of my stock ready to sell.

    Its so frustrating! :(

I have just set one up in under 3 weeks with no previous experience for under £100 (including training in web development and marketing) I could have done even cheaper if I wasn't so impatient. It is very easy when you have a decent template. I am using Elegant Themes.

    Good Luck
  • I'm considering Sellr at the moment. They will build you a custom designed website template with as many pages as you want for £120 including VAT which also includes all hosting costs for the year.

You'll have to check out their free trial to see what you think of the content management system, I personally think there are better out there but I think this is definitely the cheapest custom job you'll get.

They just asked me to show them some websites that I liked the look off and said they'd design and build it based on these. The examples they showed me looked a lot more professional than ones I've tried building myself.
  • It really depends on what you want. I've used Shopify in the past and can't really fault it. Strikingly is good too but doesn't have the e commerce capabilities.

If you're setting up a brand new store and have no idea how it will perform, I would go for the smallest up-front costs you can, test the market, and if there is demand, then look for a more robust solution down the line. Shopify and Weebly are the two that comes to mind for this type of activity - no upfront, just monthly fees, can get something running within days yourself.

If you already have an existing shop, either offline or online like on eBay, and you know there is demand for what you're selling, and you're expecting at least a few hundred if not thousands of orders a month, then you need something more serious. Magento is a good starting point here. You will need professional help to set up - and don't forget, its not just the build costs, but anything you need further down the line in terms of tweaks, add-ons, fixes, etc will cost you more money.

I suspect the OP will have already found a solution, this is an old thread.
