Scratch, scratch, scratch.....

My poor little dog has been contstantly scratching for well over a week now. She appears to have small red bumps all down her back, 1 on the top of her head and a few around the top (near her bottom of her tail.
We frontlined her 8 weeks ago (ish) and have given her another going over this week (2 days ago)
The bumps appear to be scabing over but she is still scratching, a lot.
Any ideas what this could possibly be? I cannot see any fleas on her at all and didn't over a week ago either.

It could be a food allergy. Lenny got juvenile impetigo when on Hill's natures best food. I took him off it, it cleared up, tried him on it a month or so later and within days it was back. Have you takennthem to the vets?
  • Could be a food allergy, dust mites, storage mites, bio washing powder, deodorant, and any household cleaner that you have used in the past week. I had this with my boxer girl and through the process of illimination and the help of the vet, she is allergic to beef, chicken, grains of all kinds, and bio washing powder. I would book an appointment at the vets if I were you, and go from there.

My girl now eats Burns pork and potato dried food and nothing else, no treat, just her pork and potato. She still has a scratch now and again, but nothing like she was.

It could be any number of things. Take her to a vet!
  • We initially thought it might be a food allergy although she has been on the science plan oral food for years now so unlikely?

I was hoping it was some sort of biting mite which frontline would rid. I'll give it another week and if she's no better Vets it is!

Lee111s, was Lenny on the Hills food for a period of time before hand?

They can devlop allergies just like we can. It may be something else though so I'd definitely get it checked out by the vet.

He was only a tiny puppy so was only on it for about 3 weeks before I noticed the rash. He is also intollerant to chicken. Pure yellow liquid comes out of his behind if he even has the smallest amount of chicken. It wasn't pretty when my grandparents fed him chicken nuggest by mistake a few months back. The kitchen took about 5 hours to air out! Poor sod could do nothing about it!

Flea dermatitis? He could have started the itch scratch itch cycle even though any fleas are long gone. And any fleas might be lurking in bedding rather than on your pooch.
I'd second a vets visit to rule out the obvious.

could be mites - best to get to a vet and ditch frontline and try stronghold or advantage

What do you mean you'll give it another week?? Sorry to be blunt but if she is scratching so much & has been for a week she needs a vet NOW as she is clearly suffering plus things can get much worse in a week. How will you explain to a Vet that yes she's been this way for two weeks but I thought it was ok to leave her? I can understand leaving it for 24-48hrs to see if it clears up but no way do you leave a dog for two weeks. Would YOU like to be constantly itching & scratching for that long? There are also things like mange & other causes that can cause this, please take her to a vet tomorrow!

Edited to add, I just noticed the bumps are scabbing over but she is still scratching, there is also the chance she will knock these scabs off & get infections too. I had a nickel allergy once & was itching all of the time with red bumps all over & it drove me insane but I could go to a Dr & cover my skin so I couldn't scratch the bumps.
  • Could be mites - which a dose of Advocate might resolve (often this works where Frontline & others don't) but you'll need to either get it from your vet - or get a prescription from them & buy it elsewhere

OR .... it could be a while host of other things - a trip to the vet is needed ASAP to get the poor lamb some relief
