ipad mini - facetime question

I recently purchased an ipad mini and I'm finding that it doesn't wake up from sleep mode if someone is trying to contact me using the facetime app. Could anyone suggest a way to overcome this, I'm sure it's probably something in settings but can't seem to find any information on where to start looking.
It seems bizarre that it should only work if you're using the tablet, particularly as it goes to sleep after only a couple of minutes of inactivity.
