What's bitten me in November?!

Was only out in garden for about 15 mins yesterday, just quick tidy up session out there. I do get lots of bites in the summer, although I have now discovered the Avon Skin So Soft oil thingy that apparently the Royal Marines swear by as insect repellent. However, being almost end of November, I didn't bother to put any on yesterday morning. By 4 pm I'd got two massive bites on right leg, just above my knee on the inside. Back on antihistamine tablets and cream but I'm curious as to what got me. As per usual, never felt a thing til the itching started. I live in the Midlands so not usually known as a midge area (I know that in Scotland, warm Autumn means midges can still be biting in Nov). Any ideas what it might have been? I have two bites, about 1 cm across with little hard centres. And they itch. Or did I already mention that LOL
