Not had V5C through yet. Next step?

Brother bought his car on 17th Sept. He's still not had the V5C through yet to say he's now the owner.

Is this still in perfectly good waiting time, or should he have had it back by now (all depending on when/if the seller posted it off)?

Should he at this point send off the new keeper suppliment with a note saying when he bought it & how he's not had the V5C through?
What happens if he doesn't get the form through on the back of that & he's then no proof he's the owner?

    I don't think you need to send anything. I have always found DVLA to be very helpful over the phone. Why not call them and ask?

    FWIW, I have usually found that the new V5 comes through in a couple of weeks, so there's definitely something wrong here.

    As others will point out, the V5 is nothing to do with ownership of the vehicle. It just identifies the registered keeper. But you still need to sort it out.

    I agree - phone DVLA in Swansea - I too have found them helpful - despite them being swamped under due to local offices having closed.
  • What do they say over the phone though? How does the conversation go?

    * Hi. I bought a car & haven't had the V5C through yet.
    * ok what's the details for said car?
    * This.
    * What's your details?
    * This.
    * That's fine, we'll register you as the keeper instantly & send out proof.

    All seems very 'taking ones word for it'.

    I doubt if it is that simple. But you need to speak to them to firstly report that the V5 hasn't arrived in a reasonable time, and then to ask about the procedure for getting it. They won't bite.

    No, no - it's more like you read them the serial number from the part of the V5C you received from the seller and they will confirm if the seller has sent in the rest of it with the change of owner info.

    If they haven't received it, then they take all the details you can give them and then start checking.

    There is a useful page on Government website...

    https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-registration/new-and-used-vehicles

    You need to submit a form V62. The DVLA will then write to the previous owner stating someone else is applying to register the vehicle.

    VED I'm guessing.

    I got my final reminder in the other day. 2 weeks after the end of OCT expiry. Thing is, it's the first final reminder I've ever had due to the fact that I've always acted on the initial reminder. But it, and any subsequents, never arrived. (Royal Mail??)

    I genuinely forgot. Because I am now conditioned to obey the reminder. It arives and I action it online immediately.

    Now if the onus was on the individual to ensure cars were taxed on time, why send reminders at all? Drivers would then not expect, nor rely on them.

    Thoughts?

    Edit: Meant to be a new thread, apologies. Can this be moved please?

    Nobody said they would. It doesn't harm to ask online for free though does it?

    For all i know, someone on this forum could've gone through the same & that person could reply with - don't forget to have "xyz" details at hand as they'll ask this, which would be much more helpful than just calling up, being asked a question that can't be answered & then digging round for documents while you put them on hold for example.

    Thanks for that info :)

    On the back of the slip you have it tells you to wait 4 weeks before applying for a V5c using the form.

    I waited 6 for good measure, then sent the form and the little green slip so I didn't have to pay.

    I got a letter from the DVLA that said they were processing my request, and a new V5c would be issued about 1 month later.
    (Presumably in that month they write to the current registered keeper to ask if they have sold it, and send them a HUGE FINE for not telling them if they have)

    So, a month later TWO V5cs arrived in the same post.
    One had me as the new keeper, and the garage I bought it off as previous, the other had me as the previous keeper as well as the current, and therefore had one more keeper.

    How I laughed spending £10 repeatedly phoning Swansea's premium rate number listening to v-e-r-y s-l-o-w messages as I tried to get a person on the phone not a message and a dead line.

    I assume the letter to the previous keeper somehow got the original V5 returned so 2 got processed together.
    I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

    (except air quality and Medical Science ;))
