Asus P5N-ESLI memory

I was given a computer to upgrade the memory on.

It has an Asus P5N-ESLI motherboard with one stick of memory in it.

Should the 2 nd stick be in the same coloured slot or next to the slot that already has the memory? or does it not matter?

the slots are yellow brown yellow brown.

There is already 2 GB I am putting in another 2 GB, no point in exceeding 4 GB for Windows 7 32 bit.

Usually matched pairs go into the same coloured slots however there are some exceptions to this.

On a side note its possible the ram wont like each other and you might need to try it in one of the other slots (Although admittedly its much better these days.)

This is of course assuming the motherboard likes the ram as well, usually motherboard manufacturers produce a officially approved list, however unless its a premium board they never update the list, but its probably worth checking it anyway and you can get the motherboard manual while your at it.

They should go into the same coloured slots, but you should check the manual(from 1:16 onwards) for DIMM compatibility.

    Why not install 64bit Windows?

I don't have it and it is not my computer.

All I have to do is to put another identical stick of RAM into either a yellow or brown slot.

I have now downloaded the manual and yellow slot is A1 and the brown slot next to it is A2 so I suppose I put the memory in A1 and A2.

That is what I have done and the computer boots OK.

But then you are in Single Channel Mode. If you wish to use Dual Channel Mode, use identical sticks in the same colour slots.

Take a look here for more info.

You'll probably want some DDR2 800 or 1066 memory for that board.

As has been said you normally put the memory so that it goes into the same coloured slot (IE use the black slots, then the grey ones) with matched pairs.

Unfortunately DDR2 memory is on the increase in price now as it's quite old.
