What would you expect from a cleaner in 2 hours?

Hi,
We used a cleaner for the first time today, she was lovely and did an okay job, but we paid £24 and possibly were hoping for a little bit more than what we got
For those of you with cleaners (or those that are cleaners!) what should we generally expect to get for 2 hours work (£24)? We did originally want 3 hours but unfortunately the cleaner was unavailable to do that.
Thanks

It's a bit hard to answer without knowing what you think you got. Did you not get two hours' work?
I guess you are in London if you're paying £12 an hour.0 -
In 2 hours my cleaner:
Sweeps kitchen floor
Wipes kitchen sides
Polish and hoover living room, hall, toilet and upstairs landing
Clean toilet, bathroom & en suite
Either wash kitchen floor or clean bedroom, including changing bedding
Mix of clean windows & mirrors or skirting boards or spare bedrooms or hoover stairs
Ironing to finish
You can achieve a lot in 2 hrs if you are working flat out. The rooms aren't massive and not too dirty. I tidy before she comes as I'm paying her to clean, not tidy, and she leaves any dishes.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effortMortgage Balance = £0

Pretty much the same as gallygirl. In 2 hours mine does the sweeping and mopping of floors throughout the house (all hard floors in a 3 bed, 2 living room house and 3 of the bathrooms), 2 bathrooms and a cloakroom cleaned. I tidy up and she doesn't do dishes or washing or any tidying.
It works for me but my partner doesn't feel it is good value for money (£15 for 2 hours seems really good value to me though). If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!0 -

if you can get a decent cleaner who charges £7-50 an hr you'll be lucky , mrs j is a cleaner / domestic goddess and charges £12 p/h for most of her customers, a couple of old dears she only charges a tenner ,
it wouldn't be worth her while to charge £7-50 ph ,
we're not in london btw0 -
It very much depends on how dirty the house was to start with. About 10 years ago I worked with a friend who had set up a cleaning business and charged about £10 an hour. As she was starting out she just put loads of flyers through doors and didn't insist on regular contacts so we got quite a few people wanting a one - off clean. I remember spending probably about 2 hours doing one bathroom! It had a filthy bay window thing in it that was thick with dust and grime, and that's not even mentioning the bathroom suite! I tried hard not to judge people though as I know how eat it is to let things slip, especially if you work full time.
In my own house in 2 hours I would expect to be able to
Hoover /wash all floors
Dust public rooms
Clean bathroom and toilet
Clean kitchen
That's assuming they were being done regularly and not too dirty.0 -
Thanks all!
No, we don't live in (or even near) London, for £24 we got the en-suite pretty much fully cleaned (the chrome in the shower is a nightmare, to be fair) and the bathroom (that's very rarely used), the downstairs toilet (again, rarely used) and a couple of other small bits and pieces too. To a reasonable(ish) standard.
The house is generally kept very clean by the way, we hoover (at least downstairs) pretty much daily for example and everything is cleaned regularly.0 -

i would have thought you would have got a bit more than that in 2 hrs tbh, , mrs j can normally do a 3-4 bed house in a couple of hours , top to bottom , but that depends on what things are like on arrival , it's no use expecting to get in to kids bedrooms and then have to spend 10 minutes clearing the floor of clothes and clutter , or to do the kitchen only to find a weeks worth of plates that need washing etc ,
give your cleaner a list of stuff you want doing , if the bathroom isn't used that much then maybe it doesn't need cleaning every week0 -
were a family of 4 two adults and two young children, this is what our cleaner does for us,
Week one: Hoover throughout (3 levels)
steam kitchen and hallway and middle bathroom floor
wipe down bathroom x3 (toilet /sink)
dust down stairs and our room
week two
hoover throughout
steam kitchen/ hallyway and bathroom floor
clean all bathrooms throughly x3
we tidy away before she comes, we do dishes, anything else I do, like windows cleaning and changing beds. we also hoover intermittently in the frontroom where crumbs are on a daily basis. I also work full time, so does my husband (shift work). Its a great help.
My pet hates are cleaning bathroom and hoovering throughout and washing floors.
she charges £12.00 per hour and will do 2 hours every week.
I think you need to decide what you want from her and how much your willing to pay, I approached it from what i dont like doing and it suits us well.0 -

Whenever we've had a new cleaner start, there was always an initial visit where we both went round the house saying what we would like done and the cleaner saying how much time that would take.
I have found it useful to have that agreement in writing with a revision planned in a month or so - sometimes the cleaner starts to let things slip and sometimes the householder starts adding in little extra things to the cleaner's workload.
Did you really have her turn up with no set routine planned?0 -
Don't have a cleaner but I know some work colleagues pay their cleaners what cleaners are paid where we work in the university sector (£7.19-£7.75/hr) and we are in the Mids. Personally I'd expect to pay £10/hr if they're self employed and expected to tax if applicable and NI plus travel.0
