"You need permission to perform this action"

I have been trying to back up my data on the netbook to an external hard drive. However when I plug it into any of the USB ports the netbook doesn't see it. It's a Verbatim Store n' Go 53150 500GB.

I emailed Verbatim when Google didn't help. They replied with instructions for a fix which included renaming the INFCACHE.1 to infcache.old so that it would force a new INFCACHE.1 to be created.

Windows 7 won't let me change the name. I am the only user and Administrator on the netbook. I have checked the permissions and made sure they are at Full Control. However there is an entry at the bottom of the list of permissions called "Special Permissions" which is unticked, but it won't let me tick it.

When I try to change the name I get a message that I don't have permission.

There is another account, called "Administrator" which is, by default, not enabled.

Once you have done what you need to do remember to disable it again.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

I had already activated the Administrator account, but it still didn't work.

I found suggestion to delete the file or move it to the desktop. I managed to move it and force a new INFCACHE.1 file, but the netbook still doesn't see the hard drive. Someone suggested the netbook may not have enough power to run it so I have ordered a mains powered USB hub.

When you start do you now have the 2 accounts?

Have you logged into the Administrator account?

Sorry. Just re-read your post. It may be that the drive hasn't enough power through the netbook, as has been suggested. Let us know how you get on with the power supply.

The powered USB hub arrived today. Using that the netbook was finally able to see the external drive and I have now been able to back up.
