Kobo Touch?? Advice please!

I have seen these today in WHSmith at £44.99, and could use some impartial advice.

I am wanting some sort of device to be able to read outdoors in the sun. I have a kindle account and sometimes read on my phone, but impossibleon holiday due to the glare. I also have a tablet which I rarely use due to slow speed.

Most of my 'techie stuff' is done on my phone ie banking, emails etc, i I don't play games on any device so another tablet would probably be a waste of money.

Is the Kobo Touch decent enough for general reading? I think if I download the Kobo app on my phone I can sync over wifi?

I would get the Kindle Paperwhite but it is more than double the price, and not sure if it is worth it.

Any advice would be great.

Remember you won't be able to read your kindle books on a kobo. I've not tried a kobo so can't comment on them. Personally I can't see enough of an advantage of the paperwhite over the basic kindle model to justify the extra £40 cost.
  • I have a Kobo glo which is excellent. If you download Calibre (free) you can convert all types of books for it. The glo is more expensive but has a backlight for reading in the dark and some other features - a browser and soduko puzzles.
  • I have a Kobo Touch and a Nook Glo ..... and TBH I prefer the Kobo.
As a "newbie" when I bought the Kobo, it wasn't until I bought the Nook Glow that I realised the Nook (and Kindle's, it seems) don't mark the books you've read as "read".

Means they're still in the same library as your unread books, see?
Okay, a little thing but irritating when I was used to the Kobo which helpfully marks your "read" books as "read".

As said before, Calibre works a treat. ;)

I note you say you want it to read in daylight ..... well I thought I did too, but still ended up buying a lit ereader for convenience and ease-of-use.

I chose a Kobo so I could access the ebook for Wales library site. New books are not available but it is still a useful resource and it is not available to Kindle users. I'd check with your local library to see if you have access to a similar site, if not I would probably pay the extra money and have a Kindle because the books are usually cheaper.
  • Thanks all. I only have a few books in my Kindle library, so I am not that bothered about not being able to read them on the Kobo, and will definitely look into the Calibre (get ready for some daft questions!!).

I think for the money it will be ideal for me. If I am looking into it right I will be able to:

Sync books downloaded from phone app onto Kobo
    Read in the sunlight
Download books when in a wifi area

Thats all I really need it to do, so £45 is not a bad price compared to nearly £100 for a kindle paperwhite.

Please let me know if I am wrong!!!
