Checking for outstanding parking tickets on a used car

Hi everyone.

My friend has paid a £20 deposit on Peugeot 307. Its a private sale but the seller in his own words 'buys and sells a few Cars'. He said he's had the car since June but hasn't sent off the log book to get it put in his name. I know you can check on line for outstanding finance / write offs etc but what about parking / speeding fines ? We're due to pick it up and pay the balance Saturday. Any advice would be greatly received.

Regards

Joe

There's no "central index" and the truth is that you simply have to wait for them to work through the system.

Ensure that your friend gets a dated 'bill of sale' - and do it properly - not some scummy note scrawled on the back of a fag paper. Print out a proper letter and make sure you get the vendor's full details and record them on the bill of sale and get him to sign it together with the date and time of the sale. Tell your friend to keep it safe. If you just happen to get a photo of the new car and the vendor is in the shot too so much the better.

Get your friend to register the change of ownership promptly (Get the whole V5C from the vendor - as he has not registered the vehicle in his name strictly speaking he has nothing to change) and ensure that the date you acquired the vehicle matches what is on the bill of sale. Get him to photocopy the V5C before he sends it off.
My very sincere apologies for those hoping to request off-board assistance but I am now so inundated with requests that in order to do justice to those "already in the system" I am no longer accepting PM's and am unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future (August 2016). :(

If the log book isn't in his name then I fail to see how this is a "private sale". Especially as he "buys and sells a few Cars".

The warning alarms would be deafening me, shouting AVOID! AVOID! AVOID!
  • Thanks for the advice guys. Much appreciated.
